The Katana will provide you with better gas mileage, a more comfortable riding position for normal use with the ability to occasionally take a quick turn or accelerate somewhat quickly. The Katana is also a better beginner bike. So if by *some* you mean a few hundred miles stick with the Katana.

The gixxer will be faster, better for riding in groups that love speed (acceleration or cornering) and will probably be flashier and attract more girls. The 1000cc engines also tend to last a little longer than the 600's.

If you plan to use the bike primarily for transport get the Katana. If you want something to take out on the weekends get the 1000cc bike. I love my kat and probably drive it everywhere in spite of having a car. I probably won't ever replace it. I might add a true sport bike for weekend riding though.

Is the gsxr 1000's power managable or is it gonna pop up on me if I hit the throttle a lil hard?

That's a bit like a drunk asking whether he should be drinking whiskey or beer. One will get you in trouble faster than the other, but both are dangerous. I've done my share of accidental wheelies, the 1k will do them a little easier and it usually won't be a big deal.

How you plan to ride should be more important imo. Frequent use suggests the Kat, joyriding and secondary transport suggests the gixxer. You will learn to control either fairly quickly. You will make errors on either. Accept that, know that you will need to be in a state of mind where you will be looking to act quickly and recover rather than tense up when errors occur. Relax too, I know people who've been riding for 30+ years who say they're still learning. With either bike go easy on it the first year. Occasionally take it somewhere safe and rural then open it up a little and brake a little heavy to become familiar with your bike. Take an MSF course if you haven't.

If you're the daredevil sort both bikes are dangerous. It's the riders that are dangerous not the motorcycles.

Don't forget to take into account insurance - the Kat will be cheaper to insure, as it is a sport tourer, whereas the Gixxer is classed as a super sport. Check with your insurance carrier, which may influence your decision as well.

Thank you for the input. Im not a daredevil by any means lol. I just didnt want to make the mistake of twisting the throttle on the 1000 the way I would do it on a 500r. I think I'm gonna go with the Katana.

if you twisted the throttle on the 1K like you do/can on the 500r, you would find your self on your ***, with the bike flipping down the road

Have you actually seen the GSXR in person?

$3200 for a 2001 GSXR1000 seems well below the going value of most of them around here. I would look at it very carefully. Any GSXR priced like that has probably been beat to death, doesn't have a title, or has something majorly wrong with it. Definately check for mass amounts of rubber under the rear fender!

If everything checks out, i'd get the GSXR just on the bargain factor. That seems like a steal if the bike is in good condition and not abused. Honestly, the price sounds fishy to me though.

The GSXR is a deal but do factor in the insurance.
Also what is your town like, will you get hassled on the GSXR more than on the Kat?

How long have you been riding the 500 (miles more than time)? How comfortable are you on it? Why are you looking at a different bike?

If I'm reading correctly, it sounds like you have ridden a friends 500 a few times. If that is the case, the Kat is a far better bike for your wants. But if you can afford the price difference between the two, immediately spend that extra 500 on gear. You'll thank me the first time you have an off.

I bought a used 1993 ex500. Been riding it for about 5 months to and from work. It recently stoped running. I couldnt get it to kick over so i went to cycle trader and came across the ad for the 06 katana 600. figured the price was right thought id give it a shot. The dealer then called and informed of the gsxr 1000 they had just took in and its price. I know its a way bigger bike but Im not sure if the 600 will keep me happy for a while.

i hate to say this but when i bought my kat, i didn't know anything about motorcycles. it was advertised as a gsx and just assumed it was a gixxer. so i bought the JR suzuki gixxer jacket and some gloves that said gixxer. then i found out that it wasn't a gixxer but in fact a katana. i was ****ed. after i simmered down and bought the insurance i was much happier. then went on my first long ride with my brigade, i am in the military, as part of the motorcycle mentorship program, we rode all day. about an hour out, we stopped for the last time and all the sport bike riders were complaining about their backs and shoulders hurting. not me, only thing that was hurting was my butt b/c i have never ridden for that long ever. now, i am so glad that i have the katana instead of the gixxer. i have no need to d0 150+. get the katana, you will not be dissatisfied!

It sounds like the Kat is priced right, and according to your age, driving record, etcetera, the insurance on the Gixxer could cost you more than the bike itself. The 06 Kat 600 is one of the best bikes I've ever owned and as I look back on it, it was possibly the best. You might ride the Kat for a while to get used to it and then see about a Gixxer, with the insurance being a factor. Two of five of my younger local riding friends went the superbike route and were hospitalized within three months in separate situations. Jus sayin'...be careful either way.
