  • Tranny/clutch question

On my Katana which had been sitting for a year under not very good conditions I seem to have a problem shifting from neutral to 1st gear. Would this maybe be a clutch problem not being disengaged all the way? if so how can I tighten that back up? or is this a transmission problem that would need some work? It's a 92 katana and i'ts only got 2500 miles on it. yes not very many but it's been sitting a lot.

    Last oil change was.......when?

If we ever reach the point where we can't openly discuss riding bikes on acid without even a modicum of civility, then the terrorists have won.

Or maybe the clutch cable not lubed, or biding a bit?

        Dropping N-1?
How old is the oil in the bike?
More details. what happens when you shift N-1?

Just guessing from the little info you provided.

        Lube Cable.
        Adjust clutch.
Change oil and Refill all the way to the H line.

The problem is going down from N to 1. The clutch works for all the other gears. but holding the clutch and pushing down to go into first doesn't seem to work for a couple of tries then it finally clicks down into gear. I suppose it'd help to lube up the cable a little bit. How do I go about adjusting the cable? I'll try an oilchange too with some more fresh oil since it's a wet clutch.

Definitely change that oil AND filter!

To adjust that cable, the majority adjustment is down below, near the top of the sprocket gear cover. A 10mm and a 12mm open end wrench are needed. Back them all the way IN, then back the TOP adjusters all the way in, then pop off the rubber cap and loosen the 10mm nut a bit, then adjust OUT the flat screw post, then back in until you just barely feel any pressure at all. Tighten up nut, put cap back on, adjust majority nut and stud out a bit until freeplay in handle is 10-15mm at the knob (total movement), then tighten the nut up. Fine tuning adjustments can then be made up top.

Remember majority adjustments down below, fine tuning up above.

Special K, You lost me somewhere, and I have done it before. I guess I don't know the proper names for the nuts.

I figured if I got lost, others might get lost too.
