Hello everyone,
Last Sunday I bought a 1996 Katana 600 with 12500 on the clock. This is my second bike, my first being a '98 Yamaha Seca II (in pieces in my garage now for a paint job and head gasket), which I bought in March. I have a summers' worth of riding and wrenching experience, and I've decided I love both.
The bike doesn't run yet
. The PO claimed that it was hard starting, and then the night before the deal he said he couldn't get it to start. He was pretty clueless about anything involving maintenance or repairs. I went for it anyway because I like working on bikes and the price was right.
He was asking 800 and I paid him 500. Not bad for another "platform" for me to build on, I think. The best things about the deal are brand new tires, and chain and sprockets look good. New K&N air filter, but i will probably go back to stock. The worst parts I can see for now are the very rusty headers and the fairings are FUBAR. Streetfighter, anyone?
I have pulled the carbs and installed a new diaphragm cover. How someone busted one of these is beyond me
. Probably dropped them or something.
I also have had to repair one cracked and two totally separated enrichment fuel tubes (the external ones). They were all busted at the float bowl side.
I'm hoping she runs after the carb work. She probably still needs a valve adjustment and maybe some TLC on the ignition coils/wires. Wish me luck. I also wanted to thank all of the contributors to this forum for the information on this bike, I could not do any of this without you. The free manual is awesome.
I'm not in a position to post pics right now, but stay tuned!
