  • love this form

I recently acquired a 1990 Kat 600 early model, carbs had been jetted, k&n filters and a micro muffler installed, it ran and ran like a scalded dog when it run.... But the carbs needed an overhaul bad, overloading.
Being a diesel and auto mechanic I thought no problem.
Found this form to be of GREAT help.
Props to the carbs 101 sticky.
Replaced all the rubber and done a bench sync, now it idles and is punchy as heck.
It had 1.35 main jets in the mid carbs and 1.325 in the outer ones.
But due to me snapping the head off one of the 1.35 ones in the tubes I had to down size to 1.325 in the mid and 1.30 in the outer. (Thankfully the previous owner had a bunch of spare carb parts)
Now that it's running fairly well it's time for a full sync (in the process of making a homemade sync tool)
Just want to say thanks again for a very well written sticky and lots of info!

Thanks! Will be reading this form for more useful tips.
Bike is almost tuned, still a bit of a crackel on deacceleration and a small stumble on take off... (Maybe that shim on the needle or maybe need to crank the a/f screw down another 1/4 turn).
Bike is a diamond in the rough, one I get it mechanically sound I'll be looking to restore it.
Previous owner used it as a drag bike.

Welcome. I didn't think a 600 kat would be very competitive to drag race?

That's what he said anyway.... He's got it set up to be punchy as hell.... At the sacrifice of top speed..... At about 130 it about maxed out.... I like the how it's punchy because I won't be seeing anything beyond around 80-90 anyway.
And thanks for the welcome.... I think I'm going to be here for awhile, I just reacquired my old hobby.
I will now start collecting 90+ Kat parts and start frankinstineing.

pretty sure 130 is where it's supposed to max out. Not what I'd choose for drag racing, but to each their own.

Again thanks all! He probably was bs'ing.
Now to find what all parts from different years will fit it.... Engine and body wise.
I seen a thread where you can put larger engines in the fame, who knows I may want to step it up and put the 600 in a rail model.
                      See everyone in other threads!

Found the problem.... It was the previous owner.
Jets, 6sigma ( I know general opinion is that they are crap).
I later found they are just repackaged dynojet.
The slide needless was e clipped on the last setting.
                        After following the dynojet instructions,FIXT!
                        no more surging, stalling, overloading.
                        All thanks to this site.
My Kat now purrs like a kitten and roars at WOT!
