  • Here comes another new guy......

....with some questions.LOL Just bought a "basket case" for my wife. Not really a basket case, but a project. It is a 1993 Katana 600 that is stuck in 1st gear according to previous owner (? not sure which gear, but it is definately stuck). Seems to be a weak point in these bikes. Just happened to also have a friend with a 1995 750 Katana parts bike he aquired with his 1995 Katana 600. So I picked up the engine (which is supposed to be a runner, according to a previous owner) for a steal. Along with most of the missing plastics, an extra gas tank, brake rotors, calipers, brackets (this is where the basket came in to play. LOL).... Current progress is the 750 motor is bolted up and wired in the 600 frame. Just have to reinstall the exhaust, mount the carbs, put in the plugs and see if she runs. My first in probably a long line of questions is, how do you distinguish the 600 engines from the 750's. On my 1987 Honda Hurricane 600 and our 1985 Kawasaki 700 LTD it has cast into the cylinder the cc's. I have looked all over both the 600 and the 750 engines and can't seem to find anything except a number stamped onto the rightside of the lower case. Just trying to be exactly sure what I'm dealing with. I do know that the VIN on the donor frame is a 1995 750 and that the donor engine has a larger oil cooler than the 600. The left side cover on the 600 says SUZUKI and the donor engine says NRC with what looks like a half of a maple leaf. Any help will be appreciated. Sorry for being so long winded on my first post. Thanks

I'm mechano-stupid, but the link to the service manual is here.

That should help some. If the "new" engine was a Canadian build I think there are differences in the ignition, etc...I think there's an adobe format manual somewhere on the site too- might wanna search it out. If memory serves me correctly the link I gave is all individual pages.

Anyhow- good luck with your build and welcome to KR!

Did a little searching on the forum and found some more info. Looked at the engine a little closer and found a 748cm3 cast into the lower left side of the cylinders. And the engine number is R712-151923. And just for info, the "original" engine says 599cm3 and the number is N705-146357.

                Welcome to KR.
Sounds like your 750 engine has an aftermarket NCR cover.
They are supposed to be stronger than the original ones.

Yep, that looks like it. Thought I had some odd import engine for a minute with that maple leaf on the cover. LOL

                    Thanks for the info.
