Yes it is, it seems to take out some of the vibrations and makes cold weather start-ups much better.

Is there a specific how to and a recommended advancer to buy?

How difficult is this mod to do- my cold startups are a bit tricky and I have a hard time keeping idle speed up, but with a little throttle it smoothly will sit at 1000-1500 and there's no problem with power the rest of the time.

the mod took me like 10 minutes to do. and it made cold weather start ups very easy. never even used my choke when i fired it up after sitting over the wisconsin winter.

Will it still run on 87 octane with one?

I'm fixin' to do the same mod. Calling Hole Shot on Monday. The only reason I picked them over Factory Pro, was thier advancer now comes with a replacement gasket included, for $53.

Now...this is, of course, a stupid question (and none of you should expect any different from me)...but, I will have to drain the oil before removing the cover, correct?

No, the oil drains into the oil pan when the bike is sitting.
