  • 20 year newbie

Ok, my wife and I went for a ride the other day. We road about 100 miles taking back roads and just enjoying getting out of the house without kids. When we got home I had her get off the bike and I pulled it up and parked it. I put the kickstand down instead of going through my typical routine. I normally put the bike in "N" and putting stand down and turning the key off. Well I am sure most of you know what happens next. I took her helmet, the tank bag, my helmet and the rest of the gear into the house not thinking twice Well maybe I should have, I have been riding for almost 20 years and never have I ever made this mistake, I was do. I left the key in the ignition and on over night. OH SHIATE, were my first two words when going out to the bike the next morning to go to work. To make a sad story good. It was a good thing I had to drive the cage that day. I drove into a down pore half way to work.

Like I told a couple KRer's, If I could kick myself in the arse I would have that day!!

That's what you get when you break your routine . So why didn't you just push start it ? You must not have wanted to ride it bad enough ...

being the tech I am the first thing I did was put the meter on it and saw 10 volts. I pulled the plugs on the battery and saw next to no acid, sux. I added water and charged all day. The next day I was all good and haven't had a prob. yet.

You know , last time my battery was totally dry , I just filled it with some bottled (not even distilled) water , and put it back in there . The bike fired RIGHT up like normal . Yeah , distilled water would be ideal ( I now keep a jug of it around) , but when you gotta do what you gotta do ... I'm just sayin .

yes, but it is possible to shorten the life of the battery. I sure hope not to make this mistake again. Since that happened the bike has been working fine so lets hope that is the end of it.

Hey don't sweat it were only human and we all make mistakes. I don't know if you park it inside but if you left it outside and somebody stole her that would be a biatch. Also is'nt it safer to leave it in gear so she does'nt roll off the stand by accident?

Part of my routine is parking it in gear. That's what I've always done with my car, and as far as I know, there's no reason not to park in gear, even on a flat surface.

You can tell him that, but its hard to teach a old dog new tricks.
