I'm fully covered with my collective work insurance (up to 4 weeks in a row ) and they get us back to quebec as fast as possible because once here .. the insurance company don't pay anymore .. you fall on the goverment plan then.... unless I get caught in a war ....

Is Bush planning a war in NC these days ???

ummmm sorry but I am driving down. I have the possibility of the loss of $20 securing my room and good health and bike insurance.

Explain to me why I need travel insurance?

It's not just air-evac, it's air-evac + air-med transport onwards or to home (as needed). What if you end up so mangled that you can't simply ride home or even take a bus/public transport -- do you want to spend 4-6 months in a hospital or an assisted living facility next to the gap (staffed with those locals), or do you want to be air-evac'd on a private jet to your own home area or onwards to where the right docs are for whatever ails you? Especially if the specialist you need isn't available in the greater gap area?
All these things cost huge bucks. A typical complete air med evac service means ambulance from the wreck to the closest landing pad, helicopter to the hospital, and after stabilizing/initial treatment, helicopter or ground ambulance to the airport, private jet, jet-flight (staffed with EMT, duty nurse, pilot, co-pilot, and possibly even a doctor), ambulance or helicopter from the airport to the hospital on that end. Combined, these transport costs (and med supplies/staffing during transport) can easily reach $450k for locations on the west coast (from the Gap), or $250k for destinations on the northeast or Eastern Canada. Most health insurance plans don't have good transport coverage. Just a thought.

I hate to admit it, but part of the reason I take the insurance is in case I lose a limb -- the partial dismemberment payment will help cushion the transition period.

Reminders: Rally dates this year are July 12-19. Make sure you pad that by however much you need to get there & back.

            Please Note:
A lot of the policies have significantly changed their wordings on medical evac coverage. Read the policy (pop-ups) for this -- for example HTH only covers evac if you're outside your country of residence.
A lot of policies do NOT change price or don't change price significantly by changing coverage's (i.e. $250k & $1 mil may be the same or within a buck or two of each other).

            Cheers,

Have you booked your insurance yet? I'm just curious if there has been another increase since last year.

I was just reading through the policies and looking at booking, and I'm not happy in the wordings (note my edits/adds to the last post). And, yes, rates have gone up significantly... Comparing costs...

EDIT Put the trip cost in as ZERO (no coverage on trip cancellation/trip interruption) and the costs drop back down significantly... $250k med, $1MIL evac drops to just under $30 on CSA Freestyle Lux.
Pushing numbers through their system, it would appear increase in trip-cost pushes the policy up by 5-8% of the trip cost or so... And that's where the big increases in costs are.

                Cheers,

Just called to try to get some insurance and they said "None of our polices cover Emergency evacuation from the point of injury, you have to be in a treatment facility that can not treat you and our policy will start from there." I asked how long it had been like this and they said they changed it about a month ago...

I looked up the page on it and it does list "evacuation from Initial treatment facility" http://www.insuremytrip.com/myquotec...00-0-0-43.html

I have medical already but a helicopter flight from a bad crash would not be fully covered. Sucks they changed the policy.

As a fireman emergency evac is quite expensive like i have heard of prices like around $2000 just to start the heli. So that insurance would be a major benifit to have and im sure that it varies from different areas

                    Just my .02 cents

Yes, a 60 mile trip (Landing Zone to Hospital) here is about $15,000 and goes up from there depending on what they have to do to you and what is wrong.

My disability ins covers lost of limbs/functions. It even had a chart that showed what % disabled I will be considered for losing what body part.

JUST FYI: this varies from plan-to-plan & insurer to insurer. The CSA Travel Lux plan I buy every year includes helicopter removal to the hospital because by definition there is no local treatment available for serious injuries at the Gap (at least the way I read it). In the case of the CSA plans, it is a stacked coverage, meaning they step in only after your normal (vehicle/health) insurance has capped out it's payments.

Medical Evacuation contract rules specific to this plan:
