  • Bikers is Bikers :)

So I was on my Kat riding from work and I rolled up next to this guy with mangy long grey hair and a beard, riding a Harley, with a Vietnam Vet jacket on. I peered over at him and he looked back at me with the kind of grin you can only have while riding a motorcycle. I nodded, and said something like "Beautiful day for a ride". He responded with an enthusiastic "HELL YEAH" as the light turned green and he took off. We hit a couple more stop lights together and chatted it up a bit.

I've always felt that bikers is bikers. There are different types of bikes, and different types of bikers, but if you're on two wheels you're bretheren. It was cool to have a dude riding a Harley not treat me like a jackass just becuase I ride a different type of bike.

      Dude,
I think you'll find alot of bikers have more than 1 brand in their garage too. I laugh when I'm on my Kat and a Harley guy doesn't acknowledge me, tho' they are few. If I were on my Harley they would probably acknowledge, tho' not all of them, because once in awhile, you don't see the other guy soon enough to acknowledge him.
I say acknowledge instead of wave because I might use a hand or a head nod to do so.
Do you know where the hand towards the ground got it's start, how it "came to be"?
I love chrome like a fat kid loves cake !!!

Yeah I get nods from all kinds of bikers but most of them are sport bike reiders, and to top it off I am on my scooter (which i guess looks like a crotchrocket)

Someone was signaling to make a left turn, and another biker thought he was waving? lol

When I'm raiding from Calexico Ca. to Calipatria Ca. to see my Son and my Daughter and I see a lot of Harley bikers and not all of them will acknowledge me, but I still wave all the time, and I’m also curious as HarleyKat as to “where the hand towards the ground got its start, how it came to be”???

Rode my Harley to the super bike races too!

Some Harley riders won't acknowledge me because I have a headlight modulator on my Ultra.

The origination of the left hand down acknowledgement...............it all started when 2 bikers would pass each other in opposite directions, they would straighten out their left arm towards the ground with 2 fingers pointing to the ground as a sign to say
"keep your 2 wheels down" ! (keep safe)

I've always found that bikers are a pretty small group (in the grand scheme of things, like bikers vs. just car drivers or people who don't drive at all) so why hate just for the brand or type of bike someone rides it's all about the open road anyways

It's like my sig says..I just wish all bikers had that philosophy.
It doesn't matter what you ride, as long as you ride.

I was always told it was because if you waved your hand up by your head and not by your knee that the wind due to the speed you are traveling can throw off your balance.

The left hand "wave" was (or at least it was many years ago) meant as a way to say:"Hi" and the two fingers down mean: "keep the rubber side down". I wave at every biker I pass no matter the ride or attitudes.

Between VA and WVA, i've never had another biker NOT return the wave.
I was stopped off near Charlottesville, on way from WVA back to Richmond, at a gas station. My arse and hands were numb from the 90mph+ sprint i was making, back seat loaded with gear/stuff from the trip.
I parked next to a Harley with a fatbob tank, very 'badazz' stiff looking ride. Big bubba walks out, im sittin on the ground stretched out getting feeling back in my extremeties. He starts talking. Actually initiated the convo, to my shock.

He was heading opposite way i came from and i gave him the bear and accident report. He was headed to Roanoke area. We talked gearstuff for a few... overall he asked me as he saddled up if my kat was trip friendly. I said yup and asked about his ride.
He replied..."yeah, until you hit some rough road and then it scrambles your gizzards."
Fired up his hawg, told me to ride safe and sped off.
