i just did this tonight myself on a friends bike he got a new chain and master link same problem hard ot push the plates together and it said not to use vise grips probley cuz the rip the chain up. but i did any way i took a wrench and put the closed side of the side i was pushing on and slowley tightens the vise grips and clamped that way the pin could go threw the space in the wrench, worked out great took like 20 adjustments to easy that thing on though with the vise grips.

I saved myself a lot of headache and took it to the shop to get my chain, sprockets, and rear tire replaced. After a day and $250 I had my bike back professionally done. Honestly, I refuse to do anything on my own without a professional looking over my shoulder.

I just CAN'T do the clip-type master links , so I bought the Motion Pro chain tool deal . Makes life a bit easier . And the Dremel (or hacksaw) will make short work of the chain .
