  • one more question to the hot topic of 98+ rims

I have used the search function, and only came across this next statement once, and it really wasnt that detailed.

But has anyone ever placed a 170 on an post 98 rim?
I heard this wont fit on the pre98 because brake arm mods are neccessary.

Can someone please elaborate more on this topic to help me decide what to do?

    thanks

    pre 98's have a smaller rim - it is designed for a 150, buy a 150

to answer your question - you need to look at the tire specs - i beleive avon makes a 170 that will fit.

i'll see if i can find the info again.

      SuperMaxx M6029 Rear 170 spec's for a 4.5"rim
      AV46 Azaro-ST 170 spec's down to a 4.25" rim

I think what he is asking is this...

He has a pre 98 kat, but a 98+ rim. He knows the 170 will fit on the 98+ rim, but not sure if it will fit in the pre 98 swingarm and brake mount.

odds are with a 170 even one rated for a 4.5" rim, you will have to mod the brake arm.
Even with the brake arm out of the way the clearance on the swingarm is VERY TIGHT, like paper thin. for best reults i recomend swapping the swingarm. Or stick with the 160..

I see, if i stick with the 160, there is really no point for me to get a newer rim...unless I want to get a newer swingarm...

Maybe so you can get the proper geometry with the tires to the rims???????

The 160 is not even suppose to go on the pre 98 wheel. I swapped to 98+ wheels mainly for the straight spokes, but also to properly use wider rubber. I also fitted a 98+ swingarm. BTW........ The later model swingarm is NOT a direct bolt in. You have to get all the shock linkage and then STILL do a little grinding to make it fit right.

Or maybe fit a jack in there to stretch it out a bit

is it possible to widen the arm?
