  • Gas position

I purchased a 98 Katana about a week ago and it is in storage and I do not have access to it right now.
When I took the bike for a test drive a remember reaching for the gas a it only seemed to have two postions - 3 o'clock and 6. I assumed this was on and off.
I read in the "Newbie" section that there are three positions - Reserver, On and Prime. Can someone help explain what I should have.
My 87 hurricane has On, Off, Res.
Happy to be a new member!

leave it in the 'on' position, it will only send fuel to the carbs with vacuum provided from the engine

down is on, left (front) is reserve, and right (rear) is prime...somone here has a handy little graphic that shows this, but i can't find it...

Go to mechanic's 101 and search petcock or fuel shut off.

always leave it in the "ON" position

when you are riding and your bike starts to sputter...then turn to "RESERVE"

"Prime" is for when you run the carb dry (no fuel in the floatbowls)
Prime allows it to fill them up....only turn it for about 30 seconds. Any longer and you take the risk of overflowing the bowls and leaking gas all over the place. On ly do this if your bike has been sitting for a long time and the fuel has evaporated.

What happens if you sputtered, and accidentally turned it to Prime for about 5-10 miles, thinking that it was on Reserve.
At the gas station before filling up, you see that it was turned the wrong way, and put it to On.
Is there any major or minor damage? It only happened that one time when I was still learning in spring of 06'.
Now you have me worried. She has run very strong since then.

no...because you were using the fuel Jaxkat.

Put it on PRIME and leave it a few days....see what happens

remember when you use reserve to put it back to "ON" as soon as you fill up.
