A new "intelligent" speed trap is set to catch thousands of drivers in London.

Groups of cameras will track cars over a wide area - such as a housing estate - instead of "flashing" them at just one spot.

Matt they are talking about removing the stop light camera's here due to the lack of cost effectiveness and proof that it actually helps prevent accidents.

I don't think we have to worry about big brother watching us with camera's Bro. There is this neat thing called satelite, it is real weird what kind of things they can do with them.

Nothing scares me more than this crap. I know they did something similar in Denver, and statistics have repeatedly shown that they don't prevent accidents at all. I think we need to start looking at these as what they really are: Revenue generaters. In Missouri, there is a law that states a trooper must be at the scene of the crime for a traffic violation, so Missourians don't have to worry for a while. But still. And isn't England putting some trial system into place where GPS tracks you through toll roads? I think I read about that in Wired magazine.

Is your cell phone GPS capable (if it is newer than 2000 or so, it is)?

Tracking software is already out there, they just need the legislation to start using it. Maybe Patriot Act II will do the trick...

I can't wait until Gm starts denying warranty claims b/c OnStar shows mileage/speed/rpm variances....

Blame Lockheed-Martin. They are the primary force in the speed-camera debacle, especially in England, where the division gets 2/3rds of the revenue from every ticket in exchange for covering the operating costs. The government there has already admitted that the cameras don't reduce accidents (one road-safety study commisioned by the Home Office last year showed that they actually increased accident rates due to people slamming their brakes as they approached the permanently mounted cameras).

Speeding tickets are taxation and revenue generation. You can't validly argue with me that my controlled speeding is endangering anyone's life (including my own) or that slowing down by 5 mph (or speeding up by 5 mph) will make a drastic difference in that sense... A thought that came to me yesterday perturbed me the most though -- virtually all crimes have potential fines affiliated with the penalty phase; why is it that most felonies don't ever have the monetary fine tacked onto the prison term -- surely a serious felony should be able to generate substancially more revenue than a traffic squad's day of writing tickets... Nope, got that backwards... Seems messed up to me -- the system is rewarding the police for enforcing traffic more than many more serious statutes.

I'm saying murderers, rapists, theives, trespassers, drunk drivers, embezzlers, drug dealers/pushers, etc., should be fined at the maximum fine in addition to whatever prison sentence they may get once they are found guilty. They can be forced to work at the prison for wages if need be, or even be made to sell out their possessions to comply. Why should Joe X have to go without food if he's working a minimum wage job to pay a ticket while Jimmy Y, who is sitting on a posh Suburban from his dealings in the hood pushing crack on kids just gets jail time?

Case in point: in '91, an acid-crazed lunatic (and I choose those words specifically -- he was on acid and was crazed, thinking his gf was in my place) kicked my front door frame (with door) out of the wall and charged in. If I hadn't had a gun, I have no doubt he would have pulverized me (he didn't stop until inches from my gun and me screaming stop or I'll shoot); if my neighbor hadn't screamed her kids were outside, I would have dropped him. What did he get? Charge: Tresspass; Penalty: 6 months probation, suspended sentence. I think he should have had to pay at least ten times what going eight-miles-an-hour over would cost me, right? Or are we saying this behavior is more acceptible than speeding 10 over?

Just my humble opinion.
