  • Power Options on a Kat

I have recently installed a Garmin GPS system on my kat for the long rides using a RAM mount......but the problem still stands as to how can I power the damn thing without using my battery up???......is there a good DIY site with pictures or a kit I can buy to convert my motorcycle battery to a power option....any conversion kits???.....I know Cyberpoet will know sumthing about this ...... Any help appreciated.

I don't know what the power requirements are for the Garmin, or which year/model Kat you have, so I can't really comment in detail.

For the 98+ 49-state Kats (not California model), there is a spare power take-off used to power the thermo-coupling for the fans at the right front corner of the engine/frame by the upper right corner of the oil cooler. This plug has a 12 volt hot (Red), 12 volt ignition-switched hot (Orange w/yellow wire), plus a ground and a low-voltage lead. If the Garmin can take power in the 12.4 to 15 volt range without failing, you could tap off there using standard male spade connectors. On the other hand, if the Garmin is voltage sensitive, as many electronics are, you may need to build and/or use a voltage stabilizer to ensure that it constantly gets 12 volts and not 12.8 - 14.7 volts (etc).
The pre-98 may have a similar connector.

    Good Luck!

I also have a Garmin GPS. You can buy a power cord for it that will plug into any cigarette lighter outlet. Buy one of those(around 40 bucks I think i paid) and hook up a cigarette lighter outlet(6.99 at AutoZone) to the wires that Cyber said.

Is that you in your avatar Slytly??

You can pick up a ciarette lighter/12V power outlet at walmart also and probably cheaper than at AutoZone. But both Cyber and Slytly are correct, I thought of doing the samething.
