  • Be extra careful in Quebec

Well, simply I don't know what's going on, I've never seen so many people being pulled over and ticketed. Sadly I'm one of them, TWICE within two weeks, and the worse part, for complete BS.

The first was a couple of weeks ago... 2 police cars were holding a busy corner, and ticketing one person after another, for passing under a yellow light.

What happened for me is just wrong; two lane street, a taxi stopped within a few feet from the intersection in a NO-STOPPING zone. So I have to switch lanes to the left one to be able to keep going. The light was green so I proceeded, cars were coming, so I had to make it fairly quick. The light is still green and I take my eyes away to check my blind spot for a second, and by the time I turn my head back, I see the the light changed to yellow, but now I am within the intersection. Either I brake hard, have the car behind me smash into me or end up in the middle of the intersection.

I figured that the light had just turned yellow and that I should have enough time. Problem was, because of my change of lanes, I was going around 40km/h, so when I made it to the other side so the light went red, but not before I'm under it (the lights).

Now there was already a cop giving someone a ticket, but another car pulls out from the intersection and flashes his lights at me. I end up with a ticket for doing a red.

I returned later with camera, and they were still at it. I watched them wait and go after another "yellow lighter" which, I'd have to say didn't do it wrong, didn't floor it at the yellow, etc. I then timed the light, 3 seconds, and with the road's condition, the trickiness of that intersection, if you're not going at a full 50km/h, you can't make it across if you're within 3-6 feet from the line when the light changes.

Second instance; last night, I'm being very, and I mean very good with the speed limit. I'm going 70 (the speed limit) down the 2 way highway (the 5 after the bridge going up Gatineau towards the Casino exit).

I'm in the left lane (due to the previous traffic going on the turn pike to the other highway) and planning to switch lane.

There's one car that's in the worse place for me (just at the front right of my wheel), with other cars coming up behind us. So I'm coming up next to him, and signal, I hit the throttle just a bit to get in front in a secure way just as the car suddenly slows down, so I switch lanes and recheck my speed, and I'm pretty much at 70 when I see a cop running out from behind a pillar (of an overpass) and signals me to stop.

He runs to his car (hidden in the grass also behind the pillar) and zooms as fast as he could for the 20-30 feet's distance.

He tells me that he clocked me at 104km/h. I explain to him that I was switching lanes, that I was going at 70 before and after, and if for some reason I actually had hit that speed, it wasn't more than for a second while I did switched lane.

He stated that he saw me slow down when I saw him... and frankly, I hadn't, I hadn't even seen him until he came out to signal me to stop.

During this time, he even starts questioning my wearing of glasses, of which, I'm wearing contacts. When I offer to show that I was wearing them, I couldn't believe his face, like he had missed the lottery by one number.

So, I'm fighting these, but with 2 tickets within two weeks, it's going to be looking bad... but I've only been pulled over and ticketed once in my life (which was also BS (but that's another story), I fought and won) and that's with about 25 years of driving.

So I don't know how much pressure the police is under to try and ticket everything that moves, but really be careful. I'm really driving scared more about traps that the other factors that I should be looking out for.

And if anyone has advise, or know of someone that can help (like they have in Ontario) I'd really appreciate.

Quick update - Ottawa - warning

My wife was driving around today and found that the Police are using plain clothes officers with radars hidden, and then they are radioing their counterparts a block away.

This was on the way to Vanier over the bridge for Beechwood avenue.

The plain clothes officer was on the bridge, leaning on the ramp, with the radar on the ramp to minimize people from seeing it, so unless you're on top of him, you won't be able to see or know that this is what he's doing.

It's the first time I hear of them doing it this way, so I gather there's one heck of a crack down going on.

          She saw them "catching" someone.

Just though I'd let you guys know of this new tactic.

Good thing he isnt writing the ticket, you can get out of it...at least in florida, against florida statues to be given a ticket by a un-uniformed officer...

you guys think you have it bad, over here (U.K.) we have had plain clothes (unmarked) patrol cars for about 15 years that i can think of (volvo's bmw's seat's saab's misubishi evo's etc') complete with video recording, vascar and anything else they can jam in there ....

we now have fireblade's, R1's and at least one Hayabusa to contend with, all unmarked but with cameras and hidden blue lights ...

along with static speed cameras popping up like weeds and the fear of seeing yet another mobile speed camera trap on every day out, oh and by the way our mobile camera traps aren't operated by the police, they're operated by another profit driven organisation ..

life in the U.K. sucks for the enthusiastic driver/rider
              it ain't broke ....

In Ontario, it's been a complete over-reaction to a problem that, percentage wise, is almost non-existent. So last Sept. the powers that be introduced a new Street Racing law. The coles notes version is this: If you're doing 50km/h over the limit, or stunting (basically anything a cop thinks qualifies), you'll automatically lose your licence and have your car/bike impounded for 7 days. Then you get to go to court and face anywhere from a $2000 to $10,000 fine, if convicted.

It's a big issue for enthusiasts because of the 7 day suspension/impound when you technically haven't been convicted of anything at all. Not to mention the vast powers this gives to police. It's a scary trend.

I also belong to a Mustang forum... www.gtamc.com On that site there is a member who has taken particular exception to this new law and has done a lot of work writing politicians and newspapers. He even started an online petition. And people are starting to take notice... He just did a local radio interview and a local news station is coming to interview him next week.

Here's the petition to revise Ontario's street racing law:

I live in a small town of around 3,500 people, the police here average around 20,000 speeding tickets a year. Do a google on summersville, wv worlds largest speed trap. They will actually pull you over for doing 2mph over the speed limit.

well thats really great im glad that somebody actually gets active in politics and contacts their local government when they want a law changed, im all for it. I dont like every law in m neck of the woods but im smart enough not to make ignorant and hurtful statements towards the police who are simply doing their jobs to enforce the laws.
