  • why feel the need to keep up newbs

any veteran rider who knows anything about riding and what motorcycling means is never going to chastise, look down upon, or otherwise ridicule a newbie rider for taking it slow. Or for that matter, maybe a regular motorcyclist who's just on a new ride and not used to it yet.

so Why do newbs especially, when starting out riding, feel the need to keep up the veteran riders, be it on the straights or the twisties? Is it the fear of being intimidated by the more experienced riders so they feel the need to try and keep up so they look better? or is it just the challenge of trying to ride harder and get better too quickly?

The competition, even though it is like a teen being rebelious. You can talk to them and give them all kinds of advice but they are going to learn the hard way, like it or not. If a newbie would listen to half the information given by us, the veterans, they would be a better rider, QUICKER!

When I started riding, I had friends that had been riding for some time, and they really showed me how to ride. I did not feel pressured to keep up with them, and they were really good at going at a little slower pace so I did not get left behind. It was nice having that, and it gave me a lot of confidence that I needed.

I wanna be like Mike! But seriously, you have the good and bad in all groups. I learned to ride with guys that were very safety concious, made sure that I learned the fundamentals and helped me become a responsible rider. Some people do not have that. I can not tell you how many squids are down at the local cruising lane on the weekends, some have not been on a bike for very long at all and are just trying to be cool, "My daddy got it for me", Daddy should have his butt kicked. Teach newbies safety and responsibility and promote the MSC!

                  Touche` Babs !!!

I guess, we can admit to some degree that when we ride w/ others who are more experienced, whether it be now, or when we first started out, that we had that urge to wanna show em what we can do...but its keeping that in check that keeps us upright longer.

I think that often people feel they need to keep up to be part of the group. Last year at the Gap I was always bringing up the rear. Being slow did not bother me. What did bother me was that someone (Steve or Ryan) would fall back with me just so I was not riding alone. I felt like I was slowing them down and ruining their good time. That is why I tihnk that for a group ride it is important that everyone knows the route and the stop points. That way if you fall behind you do not have to worry about getting lost.

Well , I like to know everyone is okay , but I like to have fun , too ! I've done both . Slow down and wait , and take off and wait down the road somewhere . Yeah , I like to try to keep up with whomever I'm riding with admittedly , but not if I they're going crazy-fast and being scary . I don't ride with anybody like that (TOO much like that, anyway) , so keeping up isn't really an issue , usually . Now that I think about it a little more , I don't like people leaving me in the dust . I just feel stupid when someone can walk away from me and I can't keep up . I guess it's that male competetive ego thing .
I am a fluffy lil cuddly lovable bunny , dammit !
