  • Private Property ? Huh ?

Inspired by TheTable's video the other day to take out the KLR and have a little fun , I took it out for a blast to check out a gravel road thats about 20 minutes from where I live. Its a gravel highway, really... Apparently, its a private road owned by a large oil company. I looked and could not find ANY signs claiming private property.

As a rule, I wont ride on peoples property if they have it posted, its not cool and I respect peoples rights to their property. No need to to push along the bad image of off-roaders tearing up peoples land.

Seems as if I have a bad attitude on the video I guess, but security guards automatically annoy the hell out of me in any situation.

I really hate that they block videos at work. As to security guards annoying you, I am the same way. I think it is because they want to be cops but couldnt quite make it so they are taking it out on everyone else they can. My personal experience anyway.

Man, you deserve a reward for being this patient with that kind of abuse of alleged power.
A dirt burn-out at the moment the guy got behind the bike to see the licence plate, now that would've been a bad attitude.

Hmm, I wonder if after you get a warning, what do you get? I wouldn't think they could fine you. I wonder if it's set up to fine their drivers? Seems fishy to me.

there is a 99.9% chance they were full of ****, and next time call their bluff. there are all kinds of roads like that in northern quebec, and I have been up there often fishing. only one time have I ever gotten "pulled over", and was the one time I didn't have my boat behind the truck. it was in the middle of July, and the guy told me the logging company was closed down for construction holiday and they were guarding against thieves.

anyway, he wanted my id, and I refused, like you did. he tried to say it was a private property, and I called bs....told him this was crown land, and at most they had rights to logging, but not the lakes. then he tried to say the road was private, and I called bs to that as well, pointing out that there were a a few native settlements that use this road, as well as a couple of fishing outfitters. he didn't like it, but I just told him that if he was that board with his job that maybe he should bring a fishing pole along and fish one of the many rivers and brooks that cross the road. surprisingly he just laughed and said he already had one in his truck, and takes home the odd trout for supper from time to time...then he let me go.

basically those guys are there for one reason only....protect the property and equipment of the companies in the area. and you could very well be some dude out scouting for his next haul....so they are justified somewhat. you just need to make it clear that you are just out for a pleasure ride or something, and are within your rights. if they don't accept that, tell them to go F themselves. one good thing...it's Canada, and they don't carry guns, so you don't have to worry about an over zealous rent-a-cop bustin' a cap in your azz.

that's just ridiculous, they aren't police officers, so they shouldn't pretend like they are, it's pretty pathetic really, them trying to act intimidating or something, people who are on power trips always bug me.. and its always the same with these stupid security guards.. like at the Mall where I live you have people just like this..

me thinks you are over reacting a bit. after all, they do have a job to do. those isolated companies are always dealing with theft. I know a guy who works for hydro quebec as a security guard and he has told me stories of thieves who have made long trips up north just to steal rolls of copper cable when scraps prices are high. but mostly it is the native indians that they have to watch. turn your back for a minute and they will strip a company bare of anything they can sell....then possibly set fire to the place when they leave. it has happened before. I know at least a half dozen moose hunter who have had their hunting camps stripped and burnt by them.

in short, those guys didn't seem that bad. I didn't sense any real bad attitudes. just two guys doing their job....and in a fairly polite manner. hell,....NY City is 100 times worse. last time I was there it seemed every security guard in the city had a stick up their azz. they are the ones who made me say "to F with NYC....no desire to go back to that cesspool".

ya....I am liking your bike as well. I was considering a V-Strom a while back so I could hit some of the northern roads for some fishing trips, but that plan got sidetracked. maybe next summer I will finally get one.

These guys werent bad, attitude wise anyway. I was just annoyed at the fact that as far as I was concerned, it is a public access road, and I still think it is. On the way in I kept an eye out for any indications of restricted access and I didnt see any. Also , on the highway before the turn off there are provincial road signs indicating this road. Paid for by the taxpayer. God help me if I see a provincial snow plow or any other taxpayer funded equipment servicing this road.

One of the reasons I toned down my attitude is this: Out here in the oilsands, all the major producers , Suncorp, Syncrude , Shell etc share whats called a "Site ban" list. What this is,is if an employee of the site's or any of the contractors breaks any of the cardinal rules, they get escorted to the gate of the site in question and are told never to return , and they are added to the ban list. So, that said, if you get banned from one site, your banned from all, your DONE, pack your bags and move out of Fort Mac.

I make good money out here, and certainly don't want to risk screwing that up by 12km over the speed limit and a couple of bored security guards with nothing better to do. 10 or 15 years ago , my blood ran alot hotter, might have been a different ending entirely

The Wee-strom is a great little bike and was on my list when I was out looking for something dual-sporty. We used to call it enduro back in the day..marketing or something, whatever. Anyway, after much reading it turns out that altho the Wee is classed as DS, it is more street oriented and not so great off road. The KLR is more suited to 2 track gravel and single track, trails etc. Not much good for pure MX if thats what your up to.
I picked the KLR because it was cheap and more trail oriented, and above all TOUGH.
If I wanna ride street, I'm well equipped in that department with the 1100.

hey jdseibe, i know exactly what you mean... I am also in Monroe and i used to be a security guard at your local Mall and i hated my job lol it is full of dumbarses that think they can do whatever they want because it is "private property". with the exception of a friend of mine who still works there, he is a good guy and is not a power nazi. Other than that, pretty much all dirty, power hungry idiots and they have no real power... i have seen their manual. i left that job with little to no respect for security guards and i give them one chance, to determine my attitude with them.

not quite sure I would classify following shoppers around making sure they don't lift anything, as a security guard. at most, it might be called "working security"...and even then it's a stretch. here in Canada, "in house" security don't even have the power to detain you. they can make you believe they do so you will follow them to the "holding area" until the cops show up, but that's about as far as it goes. even caught in the act, they can't make you give out personal information....and if you are big enough, you can just knock him on his arse and walk away.

real security guards are like Pinkertons, or similar. they are licensed and bonded, and can carry weapons if the position calls for it. I had a nice long chat with one of them when I was working for a company that closed down a sister plant and had to go inventory the place and bring what we needed back to our plant. I was damn thankful they were there because I had a crew of 8 guys under me, and the locals were restless. we could not even drive there with our own vehicles less we come under attack. we were picked up in a couple of surburbans by the Pinks at our hotel who escorted us in to the plant, and out again at the end of the day.

I found them to be decent guys, just doing what had to be done. ya, sure....you will always find some people who go on a power trip with the authority position, but you can't use walmart security to measure them all by. no offense, but walmart security is pretty much the bottom rung of the ladder, so for sure you can expect it to go to their heads. you know...a small position for those with big dreams.

but hey....that's just my 2 cents. I know a few guys who work some sort of "security", and they are all decent guys. no power trips or anything like that. just just do what they are hired to do...keep the peace or protect private property. they are not the kind of guys to give you a hard time unless you give them a reason to......so putting them all in the same basket really isn't right. but hey...some people just have a hard time with authority no matter what. you know....the kind that hate all cops or anyone with a badge, equally....and no respect for the job they have to do. personally, I choose to respect them for the most part because I am very well aware that they have to deal with a lot of major a-holes in their line of work.

one of my best friends is a police officer in toledo, and before that he worked security at a couple different places. I can understand what you are saying, but even he has told me that most security work is a load of crap, you sit around on your butt waiting for something to happen, and when it does most of the time all you can do is call the police unless you have a certification to apprehend someone.

and there are pleanty of guys who have a power trip over this kind of stuff, who try to act tough because they are in a position of "authority", the only thing i was getting at with my original post was that these guys just seemed like they were trying to scare him or something, when in all reality they don't have much authority to do anything.

I don't have problem with people in authority at all, exact opposite really, I understand what some people have to go through, my buddy who is a police officer has to work some ridiculous shifts, and has to do so much stuff, and really doesn't get paid much to put his life on the line. but these guys in the video are a long way from being called any sort of "authority", they are guys with lights in their cars, and a clip board trying to scare him into not coming back with a warning.

obviously I don't know the whole situation, and I don't know how things work there in... Canada?, its just an opinion from my point of view.

                            Jdseibe and GolferGeek,
Let me enlighten you Jack holes that not all security are “Mall Cops”, Some of us in the security profession have more power than you may think. Try being a dick to security where I work and they Can and on occasion have detained and arrested individuals. Not sure about Canadian laws, but while on site I have more authority than the local and State Police, in order for them to come onto our property they must physically see a crime being committed or be summoned buy us to have any jurisdiction or arrest authority. So I think you should know what you speak of before you go around throwing insults to and about us.
