  • Polished my Grab bar

I decided I did not like the Grab bar being black (remember my rims? ) so I decided to strip all the paint off of it.

After stripping the paint off of it, I was dismayed to see just how rough the grab bar was (sorry, I didn't snap any pics). It was full of scratches, and I knew polishing it was going to be a rough job.

So, I ordered an Aluminum Polishing Kit, and went out and bought some sand paper. I started with 220 grit (I know that sounds rough, but the grab bar was very rough), then moved up to 400, 600, 800, 1000 and finally 1500.

I used 3 different compounds for polishing (thats what the kit came with, im considering buying some very fine compound to get it even shinier).

The polishing itself did not take long, maybe an hour.

    Here is the finished result:

I think it looks a lot better now, then it did when it was just black.

Now to see what else I can polish

Looks sick! When I finish up the major fixes and move on to cosmetics I'm definitely going to consider that.

I wonder how the shine will hold up against oxidation...it will get a little dull fairly quickly I'd expect. Anybody have experience with shined up aluminum?

You can clearcoat aluminum, and that will keep the oxidation off.

However, I did the same things to my rims, a few months ago, and they still shine like I just did it.

Thats the plan (great minds think alike). Im saving up for a new right side fairing (mine is cracked, and has some road rash on it), then I will have the belly pan and rear frame cover painted blue to match the rest of the bike
