i have an 89 750 kat and am putting a new coil on it, but i dont remember which wire went were for the primary side. the wires are black and yellow, and orange and white (for cylinder 2 n 3). white, and orange and white (for cylinder 1 n 4) does it matter if they are in the right spot? ie if white is in the top terminal and orange on the bottom or vise versa?

coils and primary wire position?

I'm not sure it matters since they are not ground reference coils.
However there are some posts here about it..
MD86 had a drawing..
Found it..

alright thanks. this helps alot. well the Haynes manuel that i have says "make sure the primary circut electrical conectors are attached to the proper terminals" but maybe its refering to the black and white wires and not to switch them from left to right? but thanks again

Well unlike a lot of ignition systems on the Kat the secondary (hi pot) side doesn't go to ground. Each end goes to a spark plug. Because of that I don't think there is a reason for polarity on the primary coil. I think KR deserves a better diagram, I appreciate MD posting that but his penmanship leave a lot to be desired.

a bit of mix up in the question your ignition coils and the are 2 of them left and righ 1,4 - 2,3 because you have 4 cylinders and only 2 coils you have what is call a wasted spark meaning the coil fires each time it is grounded and shoots to 2 spark plugs even though only one will use that spark! Make sense? when your key is on the oringe wire should show 10 to 13 volts that wire is the positive wire check your coils for the plus sign stamped/molded around the terminals hook that one there repeat for the other side do you need a firing order let us know. I have one in the garage fairings are off so ask away

The primaries are +/- so you power the coil (the two wires from the harness) with 12 volts.
This induces a current field.
The "black box" cuts the power.
This causes the field to collapse and induces current in the secondary.
The secondary has two ends too. In a car, one wire from the secondary goes to ground and the other to the distributor. (gee I guess on antique cars that is )
On the Kat one goes to a spark plug, the other to another spark plug. the tow plugs connected by ground (the head)..
Firing order is pretty standard these days isn't it?

That was one of the first questions I asked here...
Wow spooky, for another reason.
