  • suckiest problem ever !

Okay, not really. But it was a clever play on words, as you will see :

this afternoon / evening I had a chance to do some extended higher speed riding. Once into the triple digits, the rubber gaskets that ring the Speedometer, the Tachometer and the Fuel Guage all started sucking down into the instrument panel. I didn't notice until the Speedo gasket
totally disappeared and the other two were on the way. I could literally speed up and watch them move. The faster I went, the more suction was being generated behind the guages. The windscreen is new and in proper place.

I'm wondering if there is some panel underneith missing ? My bike does have a small piece of the front fairing broken, I am going to post pictures of that and the guages Sunday morning for more input on what the heck is going on here .... thanks !

very unusual..........probably due to the missing piece..........
I've owned over 70 Katanas - you think I know anything about them?
Is there such a thing as TOO MANY BIKES?
Can you go TOO FAST on a bike?

here are the pics .... one shows the piece missing from the left front fairing, the other shows the gaskets, the speedo one is sucked into the panel, the other two are on the way.

Partway through the ride I actually stopped and put the gaskets back into place, before the speedo gasket disappeared.

I have new fairings for both sides .... is that one little missing piece where I have tape enough to cause this wierdness ?

Congratulations! You have posted a question I have never seen before (anywhere).

The only possible reason that I could see is a very low-pressure area being formed right behind the dash, so your initial guess would seem to be right.

          Cheers,

I saw the same thing in person yesterday when Walter came over to get his carbs sync'd (he had ridden about 40 miles to get to my place with the fairings off his pre-98). Solutions? Fix the fairings or use an adhesive (perhaps an adhesive RTV compound) on the groove of teh rubber to hold it in place against the dash.

                    Good Luck!

maybe try duct tape on the back of the gauges to seal any vacuum points.
                      ??

after you call the priest, put the little bell on the bike somewhere to get the gremlins out.

                          Hey,

Actually I had the same problem on my old bike (89). I was just putting them back and the problem would dissapear for some time (like a couple of months). Than it was coming back again. I thought it was just old age and the rubbers lost their elasticity.

Here is an experimental protocol :

Ride it again and watch the problem.
                          Leave the rubbers as is.
                          Fix the fairing.
Than ride again , and see if they are still suked out.
                          Put the rubbers back.
                          Ride again.

This will teach us how responsible the fairing is for the suction It's scientific !

                          W.
