gear selector issues

94 600 - little bit of backstory first, the bike was having clutch issues. as part of the diagnosis, I took off the gear selector on the left side. after hopefully fixing clutch issues, and upon assembly, I discovered the gear selector with the knurls was broke.


ordered a new one from parts store and was excited to put it back on but cannot for the life of me get it back on the splined shaft. pushing hard only moves the rod into the case further which I assume cant be a good thing. I thought maybe I got a wrong model part. found a used one and same result.


is there a special trick for this?

managed to get it finally on with some persistence. since I had the clutch cover off I pulled the clutch pack out and place a block of steel between the case and the shaft to help keep it from moving. this allowed me to put enough pressure against the shaft to get it on.
