Tore down the carb rack this past evening. Found some dirt, some grime, a couple of pilot jets almost completely clogged, a couple emulsion tubes with holes clogged and some red stuff that felt and acted just like RTV in two float bowls. Any ideas what the red stuff really was?

After a dip in cleaner I am looking forward to the rebuild in the next couple of days. Have a question though. During tear down I noticed that the needles seem a bit loose fitting in the tubes. How much is too much? Whats normal?

    Thanks!

If the red stuff looked and felt like RTV, my guess is that it's RTV. As long as the emulsion tube isn't out of round, you're all good. All you have to do is look at them. If they are out of round, it's rather obvious.

Tubes are definitely round so no problem.

As for the RTV I just couldn't reason out why it would be there....

People use RTV all the time. A lot of times they are too cheap to buy new float bowl gaskets. So when the fuel starts to leak at the bowls they just slap some RTV on and call it good.
