  • K&N Filter ...?

I hope to jet, add a K&N and exhaust sometime next year. I am somewhat confused though about the filters. Does the K&N Stock replacement filter include a donut thing that others have talked about (which apparently you face one way or another depending on options) ... or is that actually some other K&N??

Yes it comes with two centers. One for stock and another for modified.

K&N makes two types of filters for the Katanas of any given year -- one that fits in the airbox to replace the stock filter (and which ships with two donuts to change the airbox opening size), and pods which eliminate the airbox altogether. The level of jetkit and exhaust you modify with dictates which of these combinations would be appropriate.

Any benefit to adding a K&N to a bone stock setup?

Not really. The stock air filter drafts enough air to meet demand all the way through the RPM range given the stock and stage 1 set-ups. The K&N drafts a little less under 4.5k RPM, about the same from 4.6k to 7.2k RPM, and drafts a bit more above 7.2k RPM, which means tweaking the carbs to compensate. In theory, the K&N is a lifetime filter (clean & oil instead of trash & replace), but it doesn't filter quite as well as the stock filter, especially after a few months of use... different basic filtering technologies. My advice is to stick to the stock filter until you decide to go to a stage 2 jetkit and/or aftermarket exhaust set-up.
