  • '06 Kat 600 sputters and dies

Been lurking here a long time, quietly absorbing the wisdom of the experts. Now, I've got a problem that I don't know how to begin fixing.

This started yesterday, about a week after I replaced the oil, filter and plugs. I started my bike and opened the throttle for a bit while the engine warmed up. As soon as I let off the gas, it sputtered and died. Now, the engine still turns over, but it's really rough while I give it that first bit of gas, and it dies as soon as I back off the throttle even a little. Also, my tachometer needle lays flat below 3000 rpms now. This apparently started at the same time.

I know the air filter still needs changing, but I can't believe that is my root problem.

I'm not that much of a wrencher, but I can follow directions and I can recognize my limits. I would appreciate any advice on how to start tackling this problem.

    Thanks,

    AS

My advice ALWAYS goes to the carburetors. In my opinion, your pilot jets are clogged. I have no idea why they happened when you changed oil and plugs. That may not even be the problem. That causes all the symptoms you're describing.

Make sure that the plug caps are still making a good connection with the coil wires.......
When changing your spark plugs you would have pulled off the plug caps first (obviously) and they can be quite stubborn to come off. A pull here, a tug there, next thing you know they aren't making a full connection with the coil wires.
      Just something to check.

I would recommend rechecking your plug replacement job. Maybe a connection was left loose. An electrical issue would be indicated by the tach acting up.

          Thanks for the advice.

I'll check the plug connections tomorrow. Either way, I know the carbs are overdue a cleaning and adjustment. That's already on my short list.
