  • Battery question?

How do you check if its the battery thats not holding a charge, or if its the alternator thats not charging? My bike runs well, but when I shut it off it does not start, until you give it some cables.

check the voltage to the battery once the bike is running. If the alternator is not working the charge will be under 11 volts.. (assuming akts use a 12 system)

check for battery voltage which should be 12.5 volts. Start the bike, check to see what the voltage is. It should be 13.5 to 15.0 volts. Also do a cranking voltage reading, it should not drop more than 9.6 volts if it does then the battery is bad. There is also the old school way. Start the bike and disconnect the positive cable and if the bike quits running then it is not the battery.
