    Well i pulled the original engine out of my 88. and well i found the gear on the crank is multi colored obv. due to heat along with the clutch shaft but nothing on the clutch. http://photos.yahoo.com/surfincr

    i cant find anything near the shaft

    I wouldn't jump to any conclusions there..
    Those parts could be colored from the origional heat treating process.. What would cause that
    gear to get that hot? that kind of heat IMO
    would come with lunched componants...

      I never replied to this post cuz I wasn't sure what the question was. I was waiting for someone else to jump in and see what they would say.
      Peter is right....it could be from the original heat treat. It would take the equivalent of heating the gear up with a blow torch to change color like that. Have you been at your engine with a blowtorch latley? I wouldn't sweat it if I were you.

          ahhhhh.....that would explain it. looks like the guy ran it dry on oil.
