What exactly is carb syncing and how is it done?

I have a '93 Katana that's having trouble starting and staying idle in 1st gear w/out opening the choke close to half-way. Hasn't been used in about a year so I changed the oil, gas, & cleaned out the carb yesterday.

Everything else about the bike seems to be working fine. Would syncing it fix the problem i'm experiencing?

Carb synching matches all the intake butterflies,
(the flappers that are opened with the throttle)
so that all carbs are drawing the same vacuum
(then in theory the same fuel)
So all cylinders are firing the same gas/air
charge and thus creating the same power.

It is done by attaching a set of vacuum gauges
to the carbs and adjusting all the gauges to read the same.. It is easy, there are about 10 threads about it here.. do a search on synch or carb
