  • No power issue...

Out for a ride this morning, and things were great until...

Started to loose power for very short moments very sporatically. Running fine other wise, but all power would go out... lights, and everything killing the bike for a short moment, then power would come back.

Got to a populated area and pulled in a parking spot. Turn the key off, to pop the seat. Turn the key back on, nothing now.

I checked all the wires and conections, but I got nothing...

Gathing up tools now to head back out to the bike to see if I can further trouble shoot the issue.

Any ideas I should try while out there?

I wouldn't think it's the kill switch.. on or off, the oil light and head lights still work when the ignition is on.

It's been a few years but mine did the same thing, it ended up being something stupid like a bad connection in one of the plug in connections. Another time it was the fuse block where the fuses plug into. The fuse was fine but the pins were so corroded it would turn on and off at will. It took me hours of trouble shooting to find the bad plug so I would start at the fuse block.

Check everything under the tank for rub marks.

Well, I got it home on it's own power.

Think it might be a broken main power lead near the ignition switch plug. Still not exactly sure where the problem is on that wire, but it's not the plug (tested fine) or the ignition switch (tested fine). No noticeable burns or spots where the wire is exposed that I could find. No rub spots either.

I'll do some further checking to see if I can determine where the problem is.

Ding ding ding... we have a winner....

I fortunately only spent about an hour total once I got the fairings off. I started at the front side and just starting pulling all clips apart, cleaning the connections, and adding grease before putting them back. Removed and replaced with new tape alot of the main wiring harness wrap around under the tank. Cleaned both battery connections, and made sure they were tight, but never ran across anything I could definatley pin point as the issue until....

I turned the key off, turn it back on...nothing. Started to wiggle the main harness, and power came on. Repeat, with smaller wiggles until I was able to finally rule out the front side of the wiring harness. Wiggled the batter slightly, click...power on.

Turned it back off and on again.. nothing. Wiggle the battery, click, came on.

Now, I know the battery is good (tested) and the connections are good (tested) so the only thing that could have been left was.... the fuse block attatched to the battery box.

Turned the power off, and back on... nothing. Turned it off, pulled the connectors there, cleaned them, applied grease, and put them back on. Power on and it's fine. Now I can't get the issue to come back.

So.... I think it's resolved. We'll see this wednesday when I take her out for a few hundred miles run around here.
