  • A TinyBIG problem

So, I just got back from a 7 month deployment and had a nice day to do the winter mods that I couldn't do because I wasn't here. So, started with the shift indent kit. Drained the oil, dropped the oil cooler, then the header (couldn't split it from the mid-pipe so...), then the rest of the exhaust. Moved on to the oil pan (14 bolt?!?!?). Dropped the oil pick up(?), then moved onto the detent arm. Thank you for the advice on the snap ring pliers (read it in a thread on here and bought them before I started) Got the spring in and started bolting everything back up.
Moved on to the ignition advancer. Here is where the problem is.... I got the cover off and looked at the bolt in the center, it's stripped. I haven't ever taken the cover off before now and the bike only has ~2500 miles on it. How the F*** did it get stripped? Now I have to figure out how to get that bolt out. YAY.
Also, in my learning how my new torque wrench works I snapped one of the bolts that holds the oil pan on.
What a day. Hope to have the bike up and running tomorrow. We shall see. Anyone have any advice on the bolt in the center of the advancer?

That's what happens when people use that to turn over the crank. Do you have a picture of how stripped? You might be able to sacrifice a socket that almost fits and pound it on with a hammer. It shouldn't be torqued too bad.

I already buttoned everything up for today, but I plan on working on it again tomorrow. I will take pics then. Just to clarify I am talking about the allen key bolt not the raised center part on the actual advancer.
I am waiting on the battery to charge...

no idea how it got stripped A screw extractor will get that out just fine. Unless of course your like the last guy, he asked about how to get that for like 2 weeks, then paid someone to do it.

If you don't own or want to buy (or risk BREAKING) a screw extractor, you can use a drill & a 5/16 or 3/8 drill bit to drill out the head of the allen bolt. Once you've drilled the head & it comes off, you can pull the stock advancer off & the rest of the bolt will just unscrew by hand or with a pair of pliers. If you still need to remove the remnant of the broken oil pan bolt, a LEFT hand 1/8 drill bit will almost always back the screw out before it really even drills very far in. Good luck! It sounds like you had a couple of issues but nothing too bad to deal with. Ray.

I will try the drill bit because I dont have or want to buy a screw extractor. Looks like a trip to the dealer for a couple new bolts is in order. YAY.

Thanks for the welcome back. It is somewhat nice to be home.

Welcome back! I'm doing the same thing right now, I'm deployed and buying parts to install when I get back this summer. Come on July....

That bolt requires very little torque to do it's job so just go to a hardware store instead of the dealer & get a new 8mm allen bolt that is the correct length. Take the old bolt parts with you to know the correct length. Cheaper this way & if the dealer doesn't have it you won't be waiting around. Ray.

So, I finally got the screw out of the center of the ignition advancer. I took my sweet time since it was way too hot to ride. After about 9 hours (combined over 3 days) I got the advancer off. I tried a carbide tipped drill bit, it worked until I hit the hardened metal from the attempt with a screw out. I then got the dremel out and ground off the Hex shaped part of the advancer and then cut a cross into the bolt. Pulled at the advancer (with my hands and light pressure) a bit and it started to crumble the bolt so it eventually came out. Now I just have to replace everything with the new advancer and a new bolt and I am off to the races.
