Hmmm, won't it be shorter? (+2 in the back right?)

We're talking pre98? It might be a little long. It should fit but as the chain stretches you might run out of room to adjust the extra slack out.

118 is stock for all the years.

-1 in the front ought to drop the need to 117.
+2 in the rear should pop it back up to 118 (theoretically about 118 & 1/2).

            You should be fine.

If you find the chain is too short, grab a 120 and cut it down after putting it across the sprockets. 118 definitely won't be too long.

            Cheers

                Pre98 600 use a 112 link chain. 14f 45r sprockets. Pre98 wheelbase is 4 cm shorter than the 98+. The 98+ swingarms are slightly longer & wider.

I'm running 14f 47r with 114 link chain. The 114 chain gives me plenty of room to remove the rear wheel without breaking the chain and plenty of room to adjust the slack out of the chain as it stretches. No dout the 118 will fit now but you may run out of room to adjustment slack before the life of the chain has expired.

I'm showing the wheelbase is 1.6 cm difference between the pre-98 600's and the 98+ 600's, and a 2mm difference on the 750's (with the 98+ actually being 2mm shorter on the 750's)*. That said, 1.6 cm may be enough to drop the chain for the pre-98 600's down to a 114 tooth standard, although this is the first I had heard of it. The 750's (all years) and the 98+ 600's definitely have a 118 link-spec chain.

Note that a lot of 3rd party manufacturers have both the stock tooth count and the stock link count wrong in their databases (Renthrall, SprocketSpecialists, etc) for some reason.

                  * Pre-98 Specs courtesy of Mr.Clean & Highsight20202, who helped put together the info on the Katana family tree spec page.

                  Cheers

Nope you will have to move the rear 5 mm upfront compared to the original setup.

I guess kwebbel settles the question. He's got a similar set-up on his pre98.

                      I believe your info on pre98 600s & 750s is incorrect.

Pre98 600s use a 112 link chain every other model uses 118 links. I got the info from fiches (ronayers and bikebandit) and Haynes manuals(both 98-02 and 88-96).

                      wheelbase axle to axle 600s
                      98+ 1470mm
                      pre98 1430mm

                      Wheelbase 750s
                      98+ 1465mm
                      pre98 1470mm

Overall length front tire to rear cowling (entire length) 600s
                      98+ 2135mm
                      pre98 2110mm

                      Overall length 750s
                      98+ 2135mm
                      pre98 2130mm

I got this info from haynes manuals. I realize if I took a measuring tape I would come up with slightly different numbers. Things that would effect measurements; non-stock tire sizes, removing rear shovel, older stretched chain, measurements on centerstand or swingarmstand or sidestand, etc..........

Correct info Floxera, there's one little difference between the pre-98 600's.
Till 92 the stock setup was 14/46 after 92 it went to 14/45, chainlength is 112 links for both models

Cool... thanks for the updated pre-98 info... I guess highsight & Mr.Clean were wrong and I'll correct the family tree webpage in the next week or so.

                          Cheers
