Ticking in the top end indicates valves are a bit loose. Over time valves either losen up, or get tighter (bad)...ticking would indicate to me that at least one of the valves are a bit too loose. You really shouldnt hear much ticking at all...but, loose valves are better than too tight ones, which could end up in burning a valve. Lower end ticking, in the crank shaft, is usually deeper sounding and is quite serious.
I suspect your mechanic may simply NOT want to get in there again and adjust them, since he will make no money on this...I'd ask another motorcycle mechanic place to see what they say before going back.
