  • Replacement Instruments

    Hello all,

Following a car knocking my parked bike over, I need to replace the clocks/instruments on my '99 GSX750W (Inazuma) [s.o.b. also trashed gen cover, mirrors, bar end, 2 indies, the usuals]. I am looking at getting free standing 'retro' style ones, but have a few questions.

Aware that there are different ratios for speedos, does anyone know what ratio this bike would run at; similarly, are there different pulse rates for the electronic tacho that would need to be compatible?

Maybe it's too much of a dark science, but in the hope that some-one can shed some light.

    Much obliged

Are you looking at getting a new speedometer that is OEM from another bike or are you looking at an aftermarket one such as an autometer? Reason I ask is because the aftermarket ones are usually programmable for any vehicle. If OEM you might be able to pull it off with a speedohealer to translate between the Kat sender and the nonKat speedo. If you don't want the healer, my GUESS is that another suzuki would be similar in design and more likely to work than a non-suzuki one. I'd go aftermarket. My personal favorite (for a car at least, dunno about bike fitment) is this one: http://www.nordskogperformance.net/p...tail/m9222.htm

As for the tach, most tachs are about the same. Each USUALLY expects one pulse per ignition event. So every time a coil fires the tach gets a signal pulsed to it. If the tach wont work hooked up to the tach output on the Kats CDI, you can hook it up to the coils with minor wiring changes. Youd cut the tach wire from the CDI, and splice diodes in on the coil wires, connecting them to the tach wire you disconnected. This gives a pure tach signal rather than a Kat specific one. Any aftermarket tach will work in this fashion, MOST but not all OEMs should work as well.

If you look up my EFI swap thread youll find my diode diagram, I had to do the same to get a clean tach signal to the computer.
