  • Gas leaking from fuel petcock

    About 2 weeks ago I was running low on gas, so I switched to reserve. I rode home, thinking I would make it to the gas station the next day. Weather was bad, didn't make ride at all then I went out of town for a few days. About a week later I went to start it up, noticed it smelt a little like gas in the garage. Once I started up the bike it sounded really rough. I rode to the gas station and noticed I was slowly leaking gas from the fuel petcock, right where the nob is connected to the rest of the petcock.
    Today I started it up and let it run for a few minutes. It sounded a lot better and there was no smell of gas in the garage. Although, when I would blip the throttle, it would die about 1/4 of the time and dip to under 1000 rpms 3/4 of the time.
    Any Ideas?
    Could this be from letting it sit on res for a week?

    It's a 91 kat 600. Checked all the fuel lines and the vacuum line, everything looked good there.

    It's not from sitting in reserve position. It's age-related wear or previous damages finally coming to haunt. If the source of the leak isn't the hoses & connections, then it's probably the O-ring that seals the petcock to the tank (simple to replace), or less likely, a torn diaphram for the vacuum passage. Send SpecialK a PM for the petcock rebuild kit or get a spare O-ring at the local mom & pop hardware store (Ace is a good example; Lowe's & Home Depot aren't -- Ace will have single metric rubber o-ring seals in the size you need).

      Yea..........I keep the K & L petcock rebuild kits in stock almost all the time for the early Kats..........600 & 750 are the same.

      $22 plus shipping...which usuall $3-5 covers it unless you're in TIMBUKTU!

      I also have rebuilt petcocks ready to go! $60 plus shipping, but you can deduct $15-20 for turning yours in as a core for me to rebuild for the next person!

      PM or e-mail me if I can help!
      I've owned over 70 Katanas - you think I know anything about them?
      Is there such a thing as TOO MANY BIKES?
      Can you go TOO FAST on a bike?

                don't yank on it so hard or don't do it so frequently, that usually solves that problem (so I hear)

                therefore, the following equation is true.
                girls = yammah
