  • Clutch Adjustment - No 2nd Gear?

    Hey,

I just picked up a 1991 GSX, with a broken clutch cable. The bike was on stands, and went throu the gears fine with no load. After installing a new clutch cable, it runs great in 1st gear, then will shift into 2nd gear, but with any sort of load on it, it will kick it out of 2nd gear into neutral. You can shift directly to 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and it runs fine in those gears, but only in 2nd gear it will kick it out into neutral.

So i figure its either a mis-adjusted clutch cable (never installed a clutch cable on a GSX before) or the 2nd gear on this tranny is screwed.

Any thoughts/ideas? Or information on adjusting the clutch properly?

    Thank you very much,

    Bryson K

Sounds like 2nd gear to me. You always want to turn the screw in all the way to snug and back it off about 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

      See the following threads:

2nd gear failure is a common failure, especially on the pre-98 Kats (which often see more inexperienced riders due to their pricing & age). You should find all the answers you're looking for there.
