  • (Hopefully not a) Stupid Question

I have a 97 gsx600f. Does this bike have a clutch switch on it...meaning do I have to hold down the clutch lever to get the bike to start?

    Thanks!

...To clarify, I just bought this bike and it's in rough shape, but a fun project! This is, however, my first Kat.

Stock yes it does. I jumped mine when I got my bike.
90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

Awesome! Is there an easy how-to for that?

Um.... pop up the tank, find the wires in question, and change their arrangement.

2 wires that plug into the clutch pertch... pulling in the lever closes that connection. If you cut those 2 wires and just twist/connect them together... you bypass the switch.

It IS as simple as that.

It's not even that hard. If you follow the wires under the tank, you can just disconnect the clutch from the circuit.

That leaves the connection permanently open does it not?

Well, when I wrongly connected the wires on the kat, it always started without the clutch in

I'll have to give that a try tonight on BF's bike... I would have thought it would make it permanently not work...

I think it makes the circuit always closed....

The definative answer... at least for a 95 600 Kat.. (wiring will vary slightly, but will work mostly the same for all kats...)

The clutch switch IS an open switch and you close the connection by pulling the clutch in. This means that just unplugging the switch at the harness leaves it permanently open and the bike will not start.

                            BUT....

The connectors on that wiring harness were alternated... both bullet connectors but... one male and one female. So if you trace down under the tank where it connects to the main wiring harness (yellow wires with green lines I think..) you can unplug the wires to the switch, and just plug the harness together... permanently closing that connection and making the clutch no longer nessasary at all to turn the starter over.

Not to be a thread jacker.... but do Kats have nuetral safety switches or does the clutch switch take its place? My clutch switch has never worked and my bike will start in gear. (And yes, the starter is strong enough to throw you forward if you forget.) Just thought it would be nice to have one or the other, perhaps I should retrace my clutch switch and see whats wrong with it.
