I have seen some where they putty a bolt with the threads showing, and mount the mesh using a washer and nut. Easy on easy off. Saw that AFTER I was finished. But in 6the years never had to remove them for anything.

You should paint first then mesh after. Unless you want it all the same color.

    • yea I saw the same thread but cant remember who it was either lol was definitely a good idea an if I had to remove mine id reinstall em that way. Though in regards to painting I dont see why it couldn't be taped off as anything else would. It would just require more in prep time.

      • I know this is a older post, but I must say, this really helped me out with the mesh mod. I was having problems using regular epoxy, then noticed you were using a putty. Of course that was $20 some dollars later, oh well. Thanks for this walk through!!

Not a problem. Glad I could help you, even 7 years later.

Add me to the thanks list, also. Saw this mod a while back and just when I was considering what to fasten the mesh with I saw this bump.

            Putty. Perfect.

                • Bump for 2015. Seen this thread 100 times and still haven't done my mesh mod. Shame on me! I live 5 minutes from a Home Depot too!

My only concerns are the idle adjustment and the heat that gets captured under the tank...

Any comments on how the heat dissipates from within the fairings? Any noticeable issues?

                  • It's gutter mesh, the heat gain will be negligible.

                    • I saw a picture once on here where someone cut out a circle to get to the idle adjuster and used a rubber grommet to cover the mesh edge of the hole.

                      • Yep, I think im going to pick up some mesh tonight.... You guys have officially motivated me. I like the idea of the idle adjustment hole also. I may just incorporate that into my design.

                        • Going on 9 years now, and no heat problems. I only adjust idle with plastics off anyways. The knob is covered by the plastic edge.

                              Great info guys.

I agree with the hole for idle adjustment. I don't think I could do without one because of my Kat has always seemed very finnicky with its idle, not sure why.

Glad to hear that no one has had heat problems though. Usually the restriction of airflow is always a bad idea, regardless of application. However, with this many success stories, it's hard to doubt it!

What do you guys think? Red Kat, black mesh? I think so Suggestions?

                              • Just picked up some steel lath from home depot for $9. Im a little concerned that the holes are going to be too big. It is 27 in wide, and 8 ft long so I think im going to cut a piece off and mock it up and see how it looks....

Use this 27 in. x 8 ft. Steel Lath for both interior and exterior projects if you require an easily cut material that can conform to curved surfaces. Can be used as a plaster base and reinforcement on
