Don' get one that will annoy you by being too loud, or force you to use earplugs. As far as neighbors, only you know what they will tolerate!!

F&%K the neighbors... get whatever you want. Unfortuantely you won't know what it sounds like on a Kat until you hear it in person.

here is a tip...the OVAL is a little quieter at lower RPM's then the round. Go with stealth....you will like the fact that it is not loud all the time.

My boss refers to his straight pipes on his Shadow 750 as "hate your neighbor" pipes. He loves firing up the bike at 6:30AM when he leaves for work and "warming it up" by his neighbor's bedroom window.

              Myth busted.

Loud pipes don't save lives. Most car drivers can't place the sound to a specific location/direction (thus disoriented them and making them less likely to watch where they're going while trying to place the noise), and the riders of bikes with loud pipes tend to get hearing damage that cause them further risk in the future (part of why I highly recommend wearing ear plugs when riding, and more so for those with loud pipes).

              Cheers,

                  Another Myth....
I've been researching this thoroughly, read about it, asked medical specialists aso.
Not the loud pipe will damage your hearing, the pipe leads most off the noise away from the rider.
Most riders suffer off hearingdamage due too ridingwinds "playing" with their helmet.
Some helmets cause as much as 102Db at a speed off 70mph!
Recommendation? NO! riders shóuld wear earplugs, this kind off hearingdamage is irreversible incurable and can't be compensated by wearing hearingaids.... (plus once you are sounddeaf you'll be granted with a big "bonus" like whistling, hissing and ticking sounds....., believe me you won't like that!)

In an informal survey of 33 motorcycles, University of Florida audiologists found that nearly half of them produced sounds above 100 decibels when throttled up -- equivalent in intensity to a loud rock concert or a chainsaw.

It may also be that most American motorcycles do not have to undergo any exhaust noise-level inspection, while many of the Europeans have annual inspections that can include it.

Contact those researchers Mark, they will tell you that those soundlevels are measured at the exhaust, that's for sure NOT the soundlevel you're expiriencing as a rider.
Overhere the "97 600 Kat is permitted to produce as much as 96 Db at 6800Rpm and it will be tested by policepatrols if they want to. (that's stock and such level WILL damage your hearingability!)
