  • long overdue major project

ok, so i've been wanting to do a major project on the bike for a while now, and now that i finally have a garage... there seemed no better time to start.

some background on my bike... its a 2003, but it had alot of body damage to it... both sides had road rash, the front fairings were cracked, as well as the left fairing being cracked by the mirror and the bottom mount right under the headlight.

my general idea for this bike is this... i'm going with a white and blue theme. the bike is going to be painted white, with blue tribal flames. all the accents on the bike (bar ends, tripple trees, pegs, sprocket, etc...) are going to be PC'd electric blue. the rims are going to be a two tone. the spokes will be electric blue, and the rest will be white. alot of other various touches here and there, but those will be posted as the come.

so, first thing to do was tear down the bike...

all the fairings layed out and ready to start body work

so, i started the body work... bondo and sanding... a mans best friend

the fairing was cracked right by the mirror mount and and various other places... this is where bondo, jb weld, and abs resin come into play (found it to be the strongest and most flexible mix yet).

the bottom mount hole for the left fairing was also broken off, so this is where the good ol mix of bondo, jb weld, and abs resin come in

    more to come on that...

i also realized that the wiring for all my led's was a total nightmare... and figured, if i'm going to do it... i'm going to do it right...

so, i ripped out all the old wires, and decided to use a terminal board to clean it all up (alot more time consuming then i originally thought)

    finally finished

so then, i decided i didnt want to spend 80 bucks on an integrated tail light, and had a couple extra led pods laying around... and came up with this..

i'll post a video of how it looks, once i get it all done.

i've only been working on it for about a week now, a couple hours here, couple hours there... and there is a LONG ways to go... but stay tuned, cuz there are some more MAJOR mods in the works as well

Looks fun... the wiring made my heart stop.

Check your camera to see if it has a macro setting, it's usually indicated by a small flower icon... that will help you get some better close up shots.

I've done electrical stuff on the bike like that. I'll wire it up just to get it done to be used, then later I'll go back to clean it up and make it look purrty.

well, the biggest problem was that i did have a large LED strip on the underbelly of the bike... with like a 20 gauge wire running it... so needless to say, it pulled too much current, and ended up burning up all the wiring on the bike (for the LED'S atleast)

That bike needs some TLC, but it seems you are well on your way.
Good luck with the build, sure it will look sweet when it's done.

Good luck on the rebuild man. It should look good when finished. I'm getting ready to tackle mine early next year.

ok guys, sorry it's been so long since an update... been BUSY with work... but i'm glad to say i've gotten some progress so far...

so first, i pulled the rear wheel off, to polish the lips and see how i liked it..

the nasty a$$ rear wheel ready for sanding, sanding, and more sanding

and here is the final result... still not sure if i like it or not.... thinking of just going with blue on the spokes, and white lips... what do you guys think?

and, while i had the rear hub off, i figured, might as well clean it... it was completely black when i took it off.... and this is after bout an hour of cleaning with brake cleaner, wd40, and just about everything else i had on hand...

might have to take it into work and use the sandblaster... i dunno...

and then, came tonight, and what i've been waiting the longest to do... PAINTING!!! ... here's the pieces being primed...

all the pieces primed and ready for paint and clear..

and now, onto paint and clear...

pieces painted and cleared... waiting to dry, so i can start to wet sand and buff ...

then i decided to do a test piece with the tail and tank, just to get a feel for the look

i still have a few more pieces to paint tomorrow, then wet sand and buff everything to a nice shine..

i also decided on the exact graphics kit i'm goin with... except mine will be blue on a white bike...

this is only the start of this MAJOR overhaul... with some pretty major mods on the way... so keep tuned, and i'll keep you guys updated as i get more done
