  • compressor and gun question

I just remembered i have a 4 gallon 1 3/4 hp 115 psi compressor at home and i also have a touch up gun with an 8oz cup. My question is simply this can i use that to paint the fairings and tank on my bike? If i need a bigger gun can i still us that small compressor? I figure if i have the stuff why not use it if i can. Any input is appreciated

If i'm understanding things correctly i have to reduce the PSI going to the gun to about 50 PSI anyway at least this gun so my compressor should work but i better let some of the more knowledgeable individuals here answer before i screw up lol

you need to know the scfm rating of the compressor and match that with the SCFM requirement of the gun.

my compressor is a 20 gallon 5HP and it is barely enough for a decent paintjob. The compressor pretty much runs constantly to keep up. if I am not mistaken, most guns typically run at about 29-32 PSI, but the SCFM rating is just as important. Also, you will need to make sure you have proper air dryers/filters on your line or you will ruin your gun and paintjob.

          Air delivery: 5.2 SCFM @ 40 PSI; 4.2 SCFM @ 90 PSI the gun states air consumption at 30 psi ----2.8cfm, 50 psi 4.0cfm

If you are buying a gun look at HVLP guns (high volume low pressure)
They will put product down fast , but less air blowing around stirring up dust
on Dryer, filters and lines old ones can contain oil, dirt and water

I painted my whole car (not all at once) with a 4 gal compressor, I just made sure to let it catch up so it didnt run out.

You will be fine with that. So long as your temp is higher than 60 degrees and your useing the correct reducer. let it catch up after each pannel.
