  • Painting Mickey Mouse, this is a test!

OK, I just got Emgo mirrors from Special K. They are nice but I , like others don't like the Mickey Mouse look of the black mirrors. So this morning I pulled one of the originals and I am testing paint. I want a glass like look, like the rest of the bike. My plan is to match the color, when I repaint the bike I want to also paint the whole mirror. Here is the first coat of my test:

Nice, thanks for posting this thazkat.
I want to paint my mirrors and I think I have the exact same ones.. I was wondering if I could cut out the middle triangle section (shown in your pic)
I know it would goof with the mounting a bit,
    but maybe not unworkable.
I think it would look cool that way..

That's a neat idea B_P. I would like to see it.

Hey Thaz, I like the idea of matching the paint, are you using a plastic paint? As in for Plastic. I only worry about it flexing enough. I know for autos they add a flexing agent to paint for bumbers so it doesn't flake off.

I am off to cutting the mirror and I will post when done. It seems like solid rubber inside so far, I will know in a moment.

Here is the mirror, the pic is a little blurry, 1 pixel pocket camera. But is good enough that you get the idea. The only forseen problem is the strength of the unit, it will definitely hold up to the amount of abuse the stock will. That said, I would much rather break a mirror that cost 15-20 dollars each then break the plastic, like I did. This was done with a Jig saw and a drill, the drill bit should be large enough to fit a jig saw blade in. Drill each corner of the triagle.

How do the mounting holes look?
I took a peek at mine and they are not molded well.
I was wondering if there was a bit of sheet steel or wire inside that web.
Course I still won't be able to see squat in it!!

I will try and get a better picture of the mounting holes. That is the weak point I was speaking of. There is no metal in there at all. At first I thought there would be atleast a support bar inside the mirror. Nothing, it is solid plastic. A strong grade of plastic mind you. You will have to use a different size/length bolt for the top hole.

I figured, why not they are the originals and are not in the best shape. Lets see what is possible, they will be a little weaker at the mounting holes. that is better than having to pay for plastics when your mirror gets hit, right? It is still rough cut from the jig saw.

Wait until I am done with the taillight. I have a TL taillight that I was going to try and integrate in but it isn't possible. So I cut the sockets out of the TL assembly and I am going to graph them into the stock pre98 tail. It will be a pre98 two light tail.
