Painting solo cowl

I priced around to have the cowl painted and to have it red it's 200 and black like 80 that is from maaco which says they have to order paint etc... I was just thinking of doing it myself it already came primed here is my question do I still have to sand it and if so what kind am I looking for 600,800 ? I figure it should be like 15 bucks for everythign and I have done it for other things. I have a 2002 kat 750 red with the black under cowl so i was thinking black solo cowl with the red decals on the cowl.

yes sand it i would say 800 or higher

and a color rite matching can of spray paint is 32$
