Hi i have my kat in the garage all torn apart for the winter and my rear shock is ugly looking i was wondering if theres a good shock to upgrade the 21 yr old rear shock or if i should just get the same one that was in the bike we have a cycle recycling place really ght by my house i was going to stop at and compare mounting brackets and such to see if i can find one

More specifically 98-06 post kat 750 shock can be rebuilt.
If your having one rebuilt for a 88-97 model bike, you can also consider the R6 shock to lower the rear 3/4" or B12 to raise the rear, if your looking at needing/wanting changes in heights.
The front would need to be adjusted too if you lower it.

I honestly dont need a new shock but its rusty looking and im painting the bike and i dont want this ugly looking shock on it so if i can get one for cheap i woupd but is there anyways to take mine apart and just clean it up so it looks nice if not ill go buy a different one if i can find one

Can't dissassemble unless you have several specialty tools. You can still clean it and paint it to look nicer without disassembling, but it would be pretty tedious. Definitely possible though.1998 Katana 750

The shock... it's bad.
It's worn out.
It's not working correctly.
There is no doubt about it, it needs replaced. You can make it pretty if you want, but seriously... is it worth doing that for a bad part.
How do I know it's bad... cause they have about a 4-5 year shelf life. Think about shocks/struts on cars... also need to be replaced every so often.
It's time... and you would be amazed the difference it will make in how the bike rides/handles/performs.
That said... you can purchase spring compressing clamps fairly inexpensively if you want to pull the spring, and paint the parts. Check ebay/amazon. Seriously though, for $ involved... it's really worth the upgrade to a good working shock.

Thanks i think i might go with the r6 shock if not ill see what i can fab up to work because we have a cycle yard right by my house but they have no pre 98 katanas so ive been trying to figure out what i can mitch match cuz alot of the bikes there have alot of good parts

Bandit 1200 2nd gen shock will raise the tail by 2". Also better working than OEM. I personally liked the height raise myself.
98-06 Katana 750 keeps the stock height, is rebuildable... have Tmod rebuild it for you, and you will have something amazing with out spending a huge amount of $.
