Can't get it to run right? Find a trick to add HP?

I'm trying to do a 17" conversion and my stem in the donor bike is a different length

I think you need an adapter made for that. I know a few people have done that complete with write ups over in the 1100 section.

Depending on the donor bike you just just need different bearings. There are write ups on it in the 1100 section as Junker said. I believe those donor bikes were either b12s or gsxrs, but it has been a while since I read those.

Honestly, grafting on the entire front end is probably an easier way to go to 17". My own conversion was a bit of a pain and leaves you with mixed and matched parts. Easier to remember/fix issues later if the entire front end is off the same bike.

Yes. A 6 ton press will work. I've done it a few times. So long as the base diameter of your donor stem is the same as your old stem you are fine.
