I'm trying to add preload to the shock (98+ 750 shock)
Is it just me, or is it a bear?
The tool keep slipping and it's really hard to turn.

BTW I do have it on the center stand..

i had the same problem with mine, man the stupid spanner slipped off a few times and my knuckles got torn up. it was a pain i added 2 clicks and each click it would get on the verge of snapping in place but just wouldnt do it. had to lay everything into it, theres got to be an easier way lol

A bit of WD40 on the shock interface with the ramp-latches helps... As does sitting while you do the work (I put my foot against the centerstand), and only going for one click at a time (then reset the tool again into your starting position).

        Cheers,

Just bend the spanner about 45 degrees take a 12" piece off thickwalled tube with an inner diameter equal too the width off the spanner slide the spanner into the tube and use it, will be a piece off cake to adjust the preload. (bike on centerstand)

Or better yet buy a shock like I've got with hydraulic remote

CP I have a post 98 with no clicks..
Some lube I bet would help..

kwebbel I have a spanner that attaches
            to a ratchet handle..
A little leverage might help but the slipping
            is the real hassle..

So you have a 98+ rear shock from a Kat 600, Kat 750, or from some other bike?

              Cheers

What's the bottom half look like (and no, it doesn't look like a 98+ Kat to my eyes, more like the GSXR shock or an aftermarket unit).

                  Cheers

OK, either way, it's not the set-up I was expecting (the 98+ Kat shocks do not have a double-collar-nut arrangement at the top -- at least none of the ones I've seen, and the parts fiche shows the same). Thus, the instructions I was using for you are flawed...
(see 98-05 Kat 600 Rear Shock, 98-05 Kat 750 Rear Shock for reference).

Given what you do have, I have to ask whether either or both of those collar nuts have a pin through them to hold them in place (the Ohlins units, for example, are pinned in position and shouldn't be moved). If not, I suggest you get out a spring compressor, compress the spring down, then move the nuts. Finally, release the spring.

                      Cheers,

Something that will help here is bike graphite lube. Runs about 8 bucks at the local bicycle shop for a 2 oz tube. A little goes a long way. Bottle small enought to reach in put 3-4 drops spaced out this will work down into the adjusting groves. Works great.
One project done, now on to the next few!!
