  • weak brakes help!

i just rebuilt the calipers to the 94 gsxr 750 (tokicos 6 pots) and im still waiting on brake lines, but i had to know if i did them right. so i put the old brake lines back on... and the brakes feel so weak that i can squese them to the grips and still not stop! where do i start pointing blame?

Start with the simple stuff; sounds like air in the lines - try bleeding them some more to see if you can get any air out. How are you bleeding them?

90% of motorcycle forum members do not have a service manual for their bike.

i have speed bleeders (Thanks CP) and ive been bleeding from the left caliper. the left caliper isn't connected to the MC its linked from the right caliper. i bled the right one first then the left one. im gonna go do the right one again.

Also ,MC and calipers have a lot to do with how brakes work . Some kind of ratio thing involving the size of the piston in the MC and the volume of fluid needed to be pushed for something to happen . I don't quite remember (obviously ) what exactly you need to know/compare , but I'm sure SOMEONE round here will ....

might be air in the MC itself, pull the clutch a few times withthe cap off and see if you see tiny air bubbles comming up. If so you can sometimes bleed the MC right at the banjo bolt on the MC.

                    nope no bubbles...

im gonna go for a test run and see if its any better after i bled an entire bottle through... it seems a lil better but we will see.

(ive got like 10 bottles of brake fluid. i always get one when im at the dealer ship thinking i dont have any.)

I have my brake lines set up as you do, a crossover line from one caliper to the other. When I bled mine I started at the end of the line, the caliper that receives the crossover line. Once the air was out from there I went to the other caliper, the one that both lines are connected. That one required very little bleeding.

From what you wrote it sounds like you did the same.

Are you using a vacuum to pull the air and fluid out?

no im useing speed bleeders. so im just pumping the brakes with the bleeders open.

so i took a test ride and the brakes feel like theres nothing there... ive got to use all four fingers else nothing happens... this sucks...

There's your problem, you're not bleeding them you are introducing air with that technique. Close all bleeders, pump the brake several times and hold it. loosen 1 bleeder and close it back up after the brake bottoms out. Make sure u tighten the bleeder before releasing the brake or it will suck air back in. On the front I alternate between the sides to even out the flow. You will have to repeat this several times but should notice it slowly getting firmer and less air each time you bleed it.

But that's what speedbleeders are FOR , man . So you ain't GOTTA tighten the bleeder every time . They got a ball in 'em that opens the hole when you squeeze the lever , then closes when you let off .
You COULD try tying the lever to the grip overnight and cracking the bleeder in the morning . Sometimes it helps .

Get rid of the speed bleeders. Put stock bleeders back in. Fill master cyl. to top. put a piece of vac hose on bleeder then into brake fluid bottle. crack open bleeder and pump lever till all air is out of system. Continually check master cyl and fill as needed. Close bleeder.
