  • 1992 GSX1100-F inexpensive shock upgrade?

    Hi all,

I will search around a bit but if anyone has a quick answer I'd appreciate it! I did find the thread on shocks but I don't remember seeing my bike in there.

I'm looking for a good and cheap upgrade for my rear shock. I've got a 1992 GSX1100-F. Do you know if any Gixxer, etc shocks wil fit? I have a good line on an ohlins for around $600.00 but if I can get a decent set up for a lot less that would be ideal.

I know I want a better suspension than the bike's got now but I haven't really ridden it yet so I don't want to drop a lot of cash before I get to "know it" better. Plus I'm not really going to be doing any knee dragging with this bike, just commuting with a perdiodic romp on some twisty roads.

    Thanks
    Chris

It looks like you could use any of the pre 98 choices
      here...

But Mojoe is our resident 1100 guru..

        Great,

Thanks! I was looking at Hyabusa shocks as a possibility since I go around 220lbs these days. I wonder if I'd need earlier model years if they'll even fit.

I thought that because I think Busa shocks fit Bandits and if they fit Bandits and Bandit shocks fit GSX1100_F's then Busa shocks should fit a GSX1100-F. Hey was that ike an SAT question or what?

Of course I could be wrong, often am!

This thing I have found is the spring diameter.
I tried a GSXR shock and it wouldn't make it.
The bottom spring plate is too large.
It fouls at the swing arm..
I did lousy on my SATs...

            LOL!

So did I Black_Peter....arrrgh! (your name sounds like a pirate) At least I spelled my name right on the SAT, I think...

I was looking at some of the shocks online and from pictures of stock GSX1100 (maybe they were old GSXR1100 and not GSX1100-F though) shocks there doesn't seem to be any huige difference in configuration from the Hayabusa shock except for the reservoir although I'm not sure how that goes on the bike. I wonder if it's much different than the shock you tried.

I'll feel a lot more secure once I get the bike back. If need be I can take the shock off and compare it to others at a wrecking yard etc. Hopefully someone here will know though then I can get it sooner.

            thanks again,
            Chris

The shock I tried was this one:

I had to move the battery box back 2 inches
to make room for the reservoir.

As you can see this shock has a longer spring.
So the bottom plate that holds the spring was what
hit the swingarm. If I could get a shorter spring
and raise the plate I would be golden..
              Hmmm

Can you dremmel off a little of the plate or would it rub on the spring? Mechanic I talked to today said he suspected that a busa shock might work.

Hey here are some bigger pictures of my new ride!

                Boy I'm psyched!

I ordered a busa shock, we'll see! If not I suppose I can sell it again.

                    Thanks Black_Peter,

Dr. Mo_joe got in touch with me and let me know that there is at least one place that will do a rebuild on the original shock!

Cool, so if the Busa shock doesn't fit, I'll sell that and send my shock off to be rebuilt, so there are options, I love options!

I'll check out grinding the plate..
Great idea I never thought about it!!
I'll need to build me a spring compresser though,

                      Do me a favor:
take some measurements of the 'busa shock
                      when you get it..
