Black_peter dont forget the master cylinder (MC). I rebuilt my front calipers, changed the fluid, and changed the pads. I didn't notice much of a difference in the feel and feed back of the brakes untilI took care of the MC. I've seen rebuild kits for the pre98 kats here clicky I didn't rebuild mine though I bought a SV650S MC. The SV650 use the same size MC as the 98+ Kats(and I think pre98s as well) in fact the sv650 use the same front calipers and rotors as a 98+ Kat. Either way you decide to go new or rebuilt dont overlook the MC. It made a world of difference for me. Here's my MC. Good luck and have fun.

Very good point! There is also a set of seals in the compression cylinder of the master cylinder which tends to age and go bad -- and if it becomes marginal, it's irrelevant how well the calipers are working.

        Doh!!
I realized as I was driving home I totally spaced on the MC rebuild. I really want to rebuild the MC, so
online again I go. BB had the parts, $33 for the three calipers. I like the idea of going with the
upgraded MC, I'll haunt ebay and try and find one.
Anyone know what other MC's interchange?
(I know that the volume of the caliper VS MC is critical. Thanks for all the help.

I had a semi nightmare carb rebuild last night.
Had to replace all those brass screws inside with other screws I had around.. (kidding of course)
But boydid I learn a lot, a lot more then the last time I did one.

I don't know which other ones physically fit the mounting, but any four-piston 300mm to 320mm dual rotor caliper set-up should have a comparable master cylinder in terms of performance.

Last fall I rebuilt my calipers with new seals, pads, and nice and shiny SS brake lines. Motul brake fluid....bled them well with a vacuum pump, and viola! I'd say 50% more braking power compared to my stock setup.

Oh and a very good price,
                $75 for two line front.
                45 for the rear.

There is no straight bolt on replacement calipers for Kats. An adapter plate needs to be fabricated to use the gsxr calipers.

OK I am the proud owner of a Gixxer 600 lever set.
I will submit a full report upon completion,
Gixxer MC, Goodridge lines rebuild calipers.
That ought to give me good brakes..

No mention of rear brake rebuild in this thread. Curious as to why, although I suspect it is a matter of the rear brake not being the primary stopping force, so not as important to some.

                            Here is why:
I am rebuilding the rear caliper.
I am also installing a SS line.

The rear locks up a little faster than I'd like,
but offers good feedback, the rear end stays pretty stable(not a lot of step out). In addition the fluid in the rear was a nice color at least. I use my rear brake quite a bit.
Almost excusively in traffic or during slow in town riding.

Thanks for the feedback. I am preparing to replace my lines with SS as well as rebuild the calipers and MC since I have to drain it all anyway. Other than pads, all the rest is stock from '96. I already did all the vaccuum and fuel lines (carbs too).

Are you adding Speedbleeders? (bleeders screws with a checkvalve in them) They are only like $.50 more than stock bleeders (from Special K vs. Bike Bandit), and they have been highly recommended.

You know I have a pretty good bleeding set up.
I'm not sure speed bleeders would really be a big deal for me.
