  • complete oil change std to synth

    Hiya,
On the list of winter fun and games, an oil change is near the top. problem is, i have no idea what the previous owner used for oil. I want to go to a full synthetic. In the engine oil capacity chart for my '90 750 Katana, they have 3 different quantities listed. no big deal, i can understand that. my question is how do i insure i get ALL the old oil out this first (MY Kat) change, as there is a quart differece listed between oil & filter change, and overhaul. (4.1 qts vs 5.2 qts). As i've been led to believe it's a bad thing to mix std oil and synthetic, is there a simple way insure the entire system is drained? i'm assuming i'll have to remove and completely drain the oil cooler, but it seems to me that's not going to account for the entire 1.1 quart quantity differnce. Also, while i'm at it, i could use a recomendation as to which synthetic would be prefered. I'm in Minnesota, so my riding temp limit is down to about 40 degrees, and we dont get too many days over 100. Mfgr and viscosity recomendations would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Rich

unless you totally tear apart the engine you're not gonna get it all out. Dump the oil cooler, do a oil and filter change. If you mix full synthetic with a tiny little bit of regular oil you think it matters? Do you honestly think that everyone that switches to synthetic oil rips their engine apart? As far as oil, Mobil 1 full synthetic is what I use.

No sweat when you change to full synthetic. I did the same thing and have had no problems. But make sure you get a fumoto valve before you change the oil!

I use the Mobil 1 4T Racing Oil. I recommend it.

Arsenic is cool beans so don't sweat it. He knows his stuff. Some people actually mix synthetic with conventional. They even sell synthetic blend so no worries.

              CyberPoet's words:
"A fumoto oil drain valve is a simple one-time upgrade ($25) that eliminates the issue forever and well worth it IMHO. It also lets you do such things as an any-where oil change or even a single liter oil change (I ran my oil too hot Saturday afternoon in a traffic jam and swapped in one liter of fresh oil 100 miles from home).

You can get it from here.
Lubrication Specialist is an authorized dealer for Espar heaters and parts, EZ oil drain valves and Amsoil synthetic oils at the lowest possible prices.

Stock size is F111 (M14-1.25). Do not get an "N" model; you don't want the extra clearance issues with the nipple.

Cyber, this size is ok for his pre correct?

It's a spring loaded ball valve that makes oil changes a 1-finger operation. I installed it on my Kat and still think it was the best $25 upgrade. You'll have to shave down a protruding piece from the oil pan right in front of your existing drain bolt (98+, not sure about pre-98). The primary problem is that the drain bolt is a harder alloy than the oil pan and if you're not extremely careful, going past the 16.5 ft-lbs. of torque results in a stripped oil pan ($$$$$).

Oh...here in FL, WalMart carries the Mobil 1 Racing 4T and V-Twin full synthetics. You may want to investigate for them in your local area.

A Fumoto valve replaces the oil drain plug in the oil pan. It allows you to drain the oil by simply turning a valve. It also takes away the possibility of stripping out the oil drain pan bolt as it happens often.

If you have the time, you might consider dropping the oil pan and installing the Factory Pro Shift detent spring. This improves shift feel and action. I highly recommend it. It's not hard at all to install, and the spring comes with a new oil pan gasket as well.

The spring kit isn't pricey either and Cyberpoet here on Katriders stocks and sells the kit as well.

You mine as well hit him up for a magnet for the oil filter, as when you replace the oil pan bolt with the Fumoto valve you'll need the magnet. You can also pick up some OEM Suzuki oil filters from Cyberpoet as well ALOT cheaper than you can find them locally.

if your dropping the pan, put the magnet in the pan.

If you are not dropping the pan, just place the magnet on the bottom of the oil filter (outside).
