Default highway fuel mileage

I just got back from a 1400km trip up to northern Ontario and i noticed something about my fuel mileage. (Im riding a 98 750 Kat)

Going up to Elliot lake from Kitchener i was easily getting pretty close to 360km to a tank. Weather was good not too hot but coming home it was brutally hot and i couldnt push 280km to a tank. I know heat plays a factor but holy crap thats a huge difference. Just wondering if anyone has any tips to get more consistant mileage on the highway?

Was wind a factor at all? Speed? Is there a significant elevation gain on one end?

Heat will play a factor for sure, especially with the air cooled engine with the carbs in the heat soaked space behind the cylinders, but that seems like a pretty big drop to attribute to ambient temperature.

That's amazing economy! At a squeeze I have only ever managed 160 miles to a tank from my 750! That's about 257 km.

Really? My tired old 750 with one slightly leaky carb routinely hits reserve at 250KM of mixed city/hwy commuting. Pretty sure I could squeeze an easy 300km of straight hwy cruising out of it.

I thought 160 miles was pretty good. I get around 120 out of my bandit! I guess it could do a bit better if I nursed her along.
