  • 600 vs 750 highway rpms.

Im looking at buying a Kat and was wondering if there is a big difference in rpms on the highway between the two bikes? I had a 750 Shadow one time and it was screaming rpms on the highway compared to a VTX1300. Just wondering if there will be a big difference? Thanks

I can't speak on the 600. At 72mph in 6th gear I am at about 6k. I would imagine the 600 would be higher. Obviously gearing will affect that as well if you make any changes in sprocket sizes.

I never had a 600, just a 750 and now an 1100 but the 600 is going to need higher rpms to make highway power just because it produces less torque. I can tell you that when I was out riding with friends on 600s my 750 made a whole lot more useable power without having to rev it way up. Even with me deliberately taking it easy, I was constantly pulling away and having to cut throttle to let them catch up.

What is that, a Triumph engine?

I've not seen a noticeable difference between the rpms at highway speeds between the 750 and 600 motors. 2-300 rpms maybe.

There is a power difference... but it's not huge.

Around 60mph I'm doing about 5000-5500 rpms. I never really pay attention honestly but it does seem like its screaming. I have a 90 600. And I'm honestly considering getting. 43 tooth rear sprocket to drop highway rpms alittle. Right now it's a 15/45 setup I think.

I also thought the 750s were geared higher than the 600s. Like. 15/ 47 compared to the 600 which was 15/45. That will increase highway rpms alittle higher too.

Gearing commander says the stock 600 has a 14/45 and the 750 has a 15/47 but I think mine has a 15/45 so not sure it it was changed out. I will know more when I pull it apart to swap a post rear tire. I've seen sun star steel 43 rear sprockets on eBay for 45$.

I have a 750. Bought from a dealer used. On the highway at 60 it ran at 6000 rpm and I noticed I was shifting a lot at low speeds. I replaced the chain and sprockets and discovered the front sprocket was a 13 tooth. Set it up as a 15/45 which was original specs. Now it has smoother power range and at 60 mph it runs 5000 rpm. My point is you can set it up however you like with your primary riding conditions.

I have an 02' 600 and at 60mph I'm at just about 4900 rpm. Stock gearing at 15/47. So I believe at 70-75 I'm just under 6000rpm. It's not really uncomfortable at all. Cruises pretty nice on highway. My opinion anyways.

                  95 750 with 14/52 sprockets 160/60 on 4.5 rim

                  About 7000rpms at 70mph

                  Was 14/45 sprocket 160/60 on 3.5 rim

                  About 5500rpms at 70mph

Remember your rear tires also change gearing

Im going to run stock size tires. What I mean by screaming is a stock 750 Honda Shadow sounds like its about to blow up when its running 80 on the highway. I know its a totally different beast though.

Well the shadow tops out at 6500 rpms so yeah compared to that it's gonna sound like it's blowing up cause the katana will run up to 12500 rpms...

Also the exhaust plays into what your after as well but both the 750 and 600 katanas I have ridden with sound like scooters with stock exhaust, so it shouldn't sound like it's gonna blow unless you uncork the pipes!

At 80 mph it's quite comfortable...I would say far from "blowing up" lol I spend about 45 minutes each morning an eve doing just that..highway cruising.
